September 22, 2023 (KHARTOUM) – Sudan has called upon its neighbouring countries to take measures to prevent external support being provided to the Rapid Support Forces, the head of the Sovereign Council told Reuters on Friday.

After leaving Khartoum in August, Al-Burhan visited Egypt, South Sudan, Eritrea, and Uganda. He also made stops in Doha and Ankara.

In statements to Reuters, al-Burhan disclosed that he asked foreign leaders to stop the influx of external backing to the paramilitary forces.

“We asked our neighbours to help us monitor the borders to stop the flow of mercenaries,” Burhan further added.

During his interview with Al-Hurra TV, al-Burhan emphasized their accusations against foreign countries for backing the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

He pointed out that the RSF forces are now equipped with weaponry previously unseen in Sudan.

“Where did these weapons come from? This serves as evidence that certain entities are extending their support to them,” he stressed.

Al-Burhan did not name any country backing the paramilitary forces.

However, press reports have pointed accusatory fingers at the Russian Wagner group and the United Arab Emirates, alleging that these entities were responsible for delivering weapons. These reports suggest that the weapons were transported through Libya, the Central African Republic (CAR), and recently Chad.

On Friday, Al-Burhan held a meeting with CAR President Faustin-Archange Touadéra. During the meeting, the Sovereign Council stated that al-Burhan briefed Touadéra on the ongoing armed conflict involving the RSF.

“He emphasized that Sudan welcomes the efforts of brotherly and friendly countries in addressing this crisis,” the Sovereign Council reported.

Additionally, the head of the Sovereign Council met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Friday.

“Al-Burhan expressed his appreciation for Russia’s continued support to Sudan and its role in promoting peace and stability,” stated the Sovereign Council.
