UN condemns killing of 2 aid workers in South Sudan
September 25, 2023 (JUBA) – The United Nations humanitarian agency (OCHA) has “strongly” condemned a deadly attack on two trucks delivering aid to Yei in South Sudan’s Central Equatoria State on Saturday.
Two drivers were shot and killed, and both trucks were burnt and destroyed on their way back to the capital, Juba.
The trucks were delivering items procured by the UN children fund (UNICEF) and this prompted the agency to paused moving supplies to the area.
The acting humanitarian coordinator in South Sudan, Mary-Ellen McGroarty called for protection of those who provide vital assistance to the most vulnerable.
“The killing of those who deliver support to save lives is unacceptable,” she said in a statement on Sunday.
South Sudan tops the list of the most dangerous countries for aid workers in the world, the UN said.
