September 25, 2023 (EL-FASHER) – Nimr Abdel Rahman, the Governor of North Darfur state, has revealed a dire humanitarian situation, with 40,000 displaced families urgently requiring assistance due to the ongoing conflict between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

El Fasher is witnessing a surge in the number of people fleeing from the states of South and West Darfur, further exacerbated by the collapse of the healthcare system, with most North Darfur hospitals now non-operational.

The governor of North Darfur told Sudan Tribune that the total number of people fleeing from the states of South Darfur, West Darfur, and Khartoum to El-Fasher reached about 70,000 families after the arrival of the new displaced people.

He issued a heartfelt plea to both international and national organizations, urging them to swiftly provide relief aid to the displaced population in North Darfur.

Meanwhile, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has initiated the distribution of relief supplies to support 30,000 displaced individuals in North Darfur state.

ICRC spokesperson Adnan Hizam informed Sudan Tribune that the aid, comprising cold blankets, clothing, kitchen utensils, and hygiene items, was disbursed last week. These provisions aim to assist displaced individuals in adapting to their new circumstances and to fulfil some of their immediate needs.

Hizam further emphasized the ongoing collaboration between the ICRC and the Sudanese Red Crescent Society in delivering support and aid to displacement areas across Sudan.

The clashes between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have displaced approximately 5.3 million individuals within Sudan and neighbouring countries.
