Rebecca denies accusations of corruption against South Sudan Vice-President

August 15, 2008 (JUBA) — Urging the unity of Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), Rebecca Nyandeng de Mabior has denied reports that she had accused the Vice-President of southern Sudan government of corruption.

Yesterday a western business news service, Bloomberg, reported that Madame de Mabior had accused Machar of introducing foreign companies because he wants “to get some percentages of commission from these companies.”

However, in a statement received by email, she told Sudan Tribune ““We in Southern Sudan have freedom of speech; I am free to say anything I choose…But people in the same party don’t talk against each other in the newspapers, especially when I am the mother of these people.”

The GOSS Presidential Adviser on gender and human rights further added “I have access to [Vice President] Dr Riek Machar whenever I have anything to say to him.”

Rebecca Nyandeng is the wife of the late Dr John Garang, architect of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) and GOSS’s first President. The couple enjoyed a strong and close relationship and has a large family raised by Madame Garang at the time her husband commanded the SPLA during its protracted war with the Khartoum Government.

The former minister of transports in southern Sudan government was widowed as a result of the tragic helicopter crash which killed Dr Garang in 2005, just three weeks after his investiture as First Vice President of Sudan.

From her family home in Juba, Madame Rebecca spoke about the parliamentary debate during which she was reported to have made the accusation.

The debate, she said, had not been about corruption at all, but public safety- specifically the issue of the allocation of licences for petrol stations, and the positioning of those installations.

The issue is a current topic of conversation in Juba, where a proliferation of petrol stations has opened recently, some apparently close to houses and strategically important locations such as the airport.

I agree with the issue of current companies opening their patrol stations within Juba, they have came to Juba under individual agreement not under the law of South, because if they were under South they should not be able to build their business in local locations which are close to residents, It would have been organize by Southern laws (SSLA) where to build such kind of businesses which are dangerous sometimes. Riek is always revealing his own thoughts within himself which made most of the people unable to identify, therefore Rebecca you should not panic in saying any speech you believe it would help us because you have rights if not just because your husband had passed away perhaps you might have in better position other than those hyenas who are now leading South into un reorganize destination. South just admire people from their appearance rather than their capability of bringing some difference if not why do we have Riek and Kiir us our representatives since we have a lot qualified people wondering around.shame on those selfishness people.

Although Madame Rebecca is highly honored and credible for her honesty, more significantly and courageously when she managed to calmed and controlled the volatile situation resulting from the Plane Crash of the statesman and the father of her children and comrade in struggle,it is really unfortunate and unexpected for a person of her status and calibre to deliver such statements of MASS DESTRUCTION to the public at the time when we expect more closeness of our leaders and consulting on relevant issues and focusing on common goals.this without doubt proves the commends i made in one of the reports herein, that the Enemies of Independence of south,GOSS,PEACE,and Elections are working day and night seeking to try to find out who is really hating who in GOSS,WHICH enthnic groups can easily be collided and how to create ‘millitia’ to create messy situation among themselves,as the case of sudanese Gangs in Cairo terrorising their fellow southerners and cannot be arrested by police because the enemy is happy about it.
if GOSS Is not careful, there shall be more collisions of ‘big figures ‘and messy situation thereof.
i believe there is relative corruption in the GOSS BUT right approach to condemning such acts need to be exercised and not basing on personal issues, grudges whatsoever.
NEVERTHELESS,Goss is surely Progressing and maturing despites huge challenges and limitations.may God help!

    thanks

    Hi all

When people begin to speak directly about prominent issues like corruption and others, people like us/me view it as a good sign of democratic introduction to the nation. I myself want Riak,Nyandeng and others to continue pointing each others regarding such hot topics.

I personally want to advice everybody here to stop commenting with tribal machines. Please let encourage nationalism, liberalism and fairness when it comes to things of this nature.

I hope Lou and Jongkoth don’t take these stories between Riak and Nyandeng in ethnical manners.

    I hope all agree.

    God bless.

Bravo Rebbecca this is good to hear from you,cuz this parodied attack is not the right time for it, the war is still not over as others thought of, it is atime for all of us to hold together in the face of the inevitable challenges ahead of the GOSS importance.

To my view is that some people wanted to WEB-LYNCHED Dr Riek personality in GOSS and triggered the out dated subterranean political war of DRS,Garang and Riek during the struggle which they themsleves had already forgiven each other.

Riek may well have engage in the corruption by giving out the contract to some companies who are flogging to Juba every minute, therefore those accussing him should adduce irrefutable evidences as to his wrong doing and not to use Garang family as aladder to confuse Southerners.

pliz dear all, tribalism by commenting on ethnic line will not help us,look and think big to less tribalism in your heart.thank only advice.
