Macron calls for end to regional support for Sudan’s warring parties

President Emmanuel Macron speaks at the International Humanitarian conference for Sudan

April 15, 2024 (PARIS) – French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday called to stop regional support and funding for the warring parties in Sudan

In a speech delivered at the concluding session of the international humanitarian conference for Sudan, President Emmanuel Macron pledged to support a negotiated settlement of the conflict.

“France supports all international and regional peace initiatives to contribute to resolving the crisis. Each of them participates in building peace,” he said.

He further disclosed that they held a meeting on the sidelines of the conference. States and international and regional organizations were involved in these initiatives to help coordinate these efforts.

“The belligerents and their supporters are clearly responsible for the continuation of the fighting and are the only ones who can put an end to it,” he said.

“Here, I really want to call for a spirit of responsibility clearly. We must coordinate all the efforts that have multiplied. Still, we must also stop all the financing that is done by proxies because, unfortunately, the amount that we have mobilized today probably remains lower than that which was mobilized by several powers since the start of the conflict to help each other kill each other,” he stressed.

“There is a terrible cynicism behind this war,” he said, adding regional powers are financing those they believe to be current or future allies to try to have influence but, in doing so, maintain the war. I believe that the call for an end to this policy is essential.

During his speech, Macron did not name any country, but the accusations against the United Arab Emirates were present in the participants’ spirits.

Shakhboot Nahyan Al Nahyan, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, represented the UAE at the conference.

Several participants in the separate seminary of the Sudanese civilian forces raised the alleged involvement of the UAE in the one-year conflict and called to campaign against the Gulf country.
