May 2, 2024 (NEW YORK) – UN officials are raising grave concerns about the worsening humanitarian crisis in Sudan, with a group of emergency directors from UN agencies and NGOs calling the situation “absolutely devastating.”

Following a joint mission to Sudan, the group highlighted catastrophic food insecurity levels and a growing risk of famine across the country. Urgent action is needed, they stressed, demanding expanded humanitarian access across conflict lines and borders to reach those most in need.

“Humanitarians are deeply disturbed by the situation,” said UN Spokesman Stephane Dujarric. “Despite generous pledges made at the recent Sudan conference in Paris, the humanitarian appeal remains only 10 per cent funded.”

The situation in El Fasher, North Darfur, is particularly alarming, with escalating clashes and tensions jeopardizing aid efforts. Civilians attempting to flee south are reportedly being attacked and robbed while fighting cuts off vital humanitarian access.

“If the violence escalates further,” Dujarric warned, “hundreds of thousands will be deprived of food, shelter, and livelihood support. This could also cripple access to other areas in Darfur.”

The UN urges all parties to the conflict to ensure the safety of civilians and allow unimpeded humanitarian access. Increased funding is also critical to prevent a full-blown famine and alleviate the suffering of millions of Sudanese.
