South Sudan delegation participates in border workshop in UK

September 21, 2008 (LONDON) – Officials from southern Sudan government participated in a three day training workshop on strategies and tools for effective border management in the United Kingdom.

Policy-makers and Practitioners from over 24 countries participated in a three days training workshop organized by the International Boundary Research Unit (IBRU) OF Durham University, UK on the 14th to 17th of September, 2008 in collaboration with the World Border police (Border-pol).

The training workshop is one of series of training programs held every six months and is designed to help policy-makers and practitioners develop an effective border management strategy against external threats amidst the 21st Cent6ury complex and challenging task of managing borders.

The government of Southern Sudan participants includes Eng. Riek Degol Juer, the Deputy Chair of the North-South Border Technical Committee, Dr.Joshua Akol Otor, Professor of Geography Department, University of Juba and Mr.Joseph Madak Both, Director General of Policy and Monitoring Government of Southern Sudan.

The training workshop, led by expert tutors, provided practical instructions on a range of topics which are often overlooked elsewhere, including managing border crossings, monitoring and controlling borders between crossing points; facilitating interagency cooperation; managing maritime borders and environmental and transboundary resource management.
