UNISFA says investigating killing of teenager Abyei camp

June 26, 2024 (ABYEI) – The United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) has said it is investigating an incident in which a 16-year-old male was killed and another injured at one of its camps on June 23, 2024.

This, UNISFA said in a statement on Tuesday, followed an alleged intrusion attempt which occurred at one of the UNISFA camps in Abyei in the early hours of Sunday.

The deceased and three others are accused of illegally and forcefully breaching the security perimeter of the UN facility. The peacekeepers tried to stop them in vain and opened fire leading to the death of one and injury of another.

“Despite repeated warnings, the intruders attacked peacekeepers, escalating the situation, and necessitating the use of force,” partly reads the statement.

UNISFA said its personnel swiftly provided medical assistance and transported the injured individuals to the Level-II hospital for immediate and appropriate care.

“Unfortunately, one of them succumbed to injuries on the way,” the noted, adding, “We extend our deepest condolences to the families affected and reaffirm our commitment to transparency as we investigate this matter”.

The peacekeeping mission said it is engaging the Juba-appointed administration and community leadership on the matter, while pledging peace and security.

“UNISFA remains dedicated to its mission of maintaining peace and security in Abyei and ensuring the well-being of its residents,” further stressed the statement.
