Sudan conflict escalating a humanitarian crisis in Sennar state
July 4, 2024 (KHARTOUM) – The ongoing conflict in Sudan is escalating a humanitarian crisis in Sennar State, the United Nations Humanitarian Affairs agency (OCHA) has warned.
The revelation comes in the wake of a visit by the UN team to several reception centers in Gedaref, where displaced families are seeking shelter after clashes that erupted in Sennar.
Also, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) expressed concerns after a mosque in El Fashar, where relief food was being distributed, was attacked by a drone, killing eight children.
“The mosque had been providing food to vulnerable children and their families and was clearly not a safe place. The senseless killing of children in Sudan and elsewhere must end,” noted Dujarric.
Meanwhile OCHA further said it is deeply concerned that a critical supply route may be severed, halting the passage of humanitarian assistance from Port Sudan in the east.
“We reiterate that a famine is looming, and it is imperative to sustain the delivery of life-saving aid across conflict lines and across borders,” stressed Dujarric.
More than 8 million people have been displaced since conflict broke out in Sudan between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in mid-April last year.
