Darfur IDP’s say attacked by infiltrators following protests
October 21, 2008 (KHARTOUM) – One Darfur Internally Displaced Person (IDP) was killed by unidentified men, a camp leader said today.
The incident happened after the IDP’s staged a protest yesterday to alert the international community to the volatile security situation as well as convey their request to disarm the Khartoum backed Janjaweed militias before holding peace negotiations.
The IDP’s spokesperson Hussein Abu Sharati told Sudan Tribune today that a number people infiltrated the Humedia camp at 8 pm last night and assaulted those who took part in yesterday’s demonstrations.
“They murdered one man by the name of Mohamed Adam. It is for those reasons we reject peace talks before security” Sharati said.
A state official in Zalingi came to investigate and receive the body but the camp residents refused to give it to him, the IDP spokesperson said.
The IDP camps have remained tense following a deadly attack by government forces on Kalma last August that killed at least 30 people and injured many others.
The camp residents believe Khartoum wants to evacuate the camps prompting peacekeepers to patrol camps to assure the IDP’s.
UN experts estimate some 300,000 people have died and 2.5 million driven from their homes. Sudan blames the Western media for exaggerating the conflict and puts the death toll at 10,000.
