Khartoum Bahri diarrhoea cases top 4,000; cholera deaths rise in River Nile

September 15, 2024 (KHARTOUM) – The number of watery diarrhoea cases in Sudan’s Khartoum Bahri, controlled by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), has surpassed 4,000, the Bahri Emergency Room, a volunteer group, said on Sunday.

The room reported receiving reports of 4,113 cases, with the majority concentrated in central and southern Bahri.

A member of the volunteer group confirmed the widespread outbreak of diseases like cholera, typhoid, and malaria, exacerbated by the lack of testing tools and closed hospitals.

He urged international health organizations and conflicting parties to intervene to address the “catastrophic health situation”.

River Nile state

Separately, the health ministry in River Nile state reported a rise in cholera cases to 2,253, with 57 deaths.

The federal health ministry’s latest figures show 8,350 cholera cases nationwide, including 270 deaths across eight states.

Sudan’s health system is severely strained, with 80% of facilities in conflict zones non-operational amid medicine and supply shortages.

The situation is further compounded by the ongoing conflict and the arrival of the rainy season.
