Sudan army airstrike kills at least six in Khartoum

September 29, 2024 (KHARTOUM) – An airstrike by the Sudanese army killed at least six people and wounded ten others in residential areas south of Khartoum on Sunday, a local emergency service said.

The attack hit the Al-Azhari and Al-Ingaz districts, which have seen heavy fighting between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group since conflict erupted in April.

“At least six people were killed, and more than ten others were injured, including four children, in an indiscriminate bombing by army aircraft that targeted homes,” Mohamed Kindasha, a spokesperson for the South Belt Emergency Room, said in a statement.

He said residents were panicked, and many were preparing to leave the area on Monday.

The South Belt area, which includes several residential neighbourhoods, has been caught in the crossfire between the army and the RSF. The area is frequently subjected to artillery shelling and airstrikes, resulting in numerous civilian casualties.

The airstrike comes amid intensified fighting in the capital over the past three days, as the army launched a major offensive to retake control of Khartoum from the RSF.
