AUPSC to discuss Sudan conflict and conduct field visit

October 1, 2024 (ADDIS ABABA) –The African Union (AU) is escalating its efforts to end the Sudanese crisis. This month, it plans to hold a meeting of its Peace and Security Council (PSC) Ad Hoc Presidential Committee and conduct a field visit to Port Sudan.

In a meeting held on September 25, the PSC expressed grave concern over continued fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), particularly recent clashes in El Fasher, North Darfur.

The Council denounced attacks on civilians, violence against women and children, and the obstruction of humanitarian access.

The PSC reiterated its call for an immediate, unconditional ceasefire and emphasized the urgent need to protect civilians and ensure aid delivery. It also demanded the RSF lift its siege of El Fasher and urged both sides to guarantee safe passage for aid workers.

Reiterating its commitment to a peaceful resolution, the PSC urged all external actors to avoid fuelling the conflict and called for greater coordination between the AU, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), and neighbouring countries.

To , the PSC will conduct a field visit to Port Sudan in October, led by Egypt. The aim is to engage with stakeholders and explore paths to sustainable peace.

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, Chair of the PSC Ad Hoc Presidential Committee on Sudan, will convene a meeting of the Committee this month. The PSC called on AU members and the international community to support the Committee’s efforts to end the conflict rapidly.
