Egypt rejects RSF leader’s claim of military support for Sudanese army

October 9, 2024 (CAIRO) – Egypt’s foreign ministry late on Wednesday denied accusations by Rapid Support Forces (RSF) leader Mohamed Hamdan Daglo that it was supporting the Sudanese army in the country’s ongoing conflict.

Dagalo, known as Hemetti, said in a recorded statement that Egyptian aircraft had bombed his forces in central Sudan, adding to an earlier claim of strikes in Omdurman. He also accused Egypt of supplying the army with warplanes and missiles.

Egypt’s foreign ministry swiftly rejected the allegations, calling on the international community to “examine the evidence that proves the truth of what the commander of the Rapid Support Militia said.”

“These allegations come amid intensive Egyptian moves to stop the war, protect civilians, and strengthen the international response to humanitarian relief plans,” the ministry said in a statement.

It added that Egypt was committed to Sudan’s security and unity and would continue to support the Sudanese people.

The conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF erupted in April 2023, triggering a humanitarian crisis that has displaced millions. Some 1.2 million Sudanese have fled to Egypt, and part of the 2.3 million have sought refuge in neighbouring countries.
