Sudanese opposition NDA leader in Uganda, meets Museveni on peace talks

KAMPALA, March 18, 2004 (Sudan Tribune) — The president of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni, who is also the current chairman of Inter-governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) member countries, received the chairman of the opposition National Democratic Alliance (NDA), Mohamed Osman al-Mirghani, on Tuesday 16 March at his residence in northern Uganda.

The discussion centred on development regarding Sudanese issue and efforts being exerted to achieve a comprehensive and just peace. Mr Mirghani stated NDA’s preservation and commitment to the realization of peace.

Al-Mirghani affirmed to President Museveni the NDA commitment to the framework agreement signed between it and the Sudanese government in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. He also expressed commitment to the Machakos peace protocol and what had been agreed upon concerning the unity of Sudan, as well as other issues agreed in Naivasha, Kenya.

Museveni welcomed Mirghani for accepting his invitation to Uganda saying that, in his capacity as the current IGAD chairman, It was important that Mr Mirghani’s views were heard as part of participation process and listening to all parties concerned in the peace process.
