October 30, 2024 (CAIRO) – Egypt’s foreign ministry on Wednesday condemned what it called “fierce attacks” by Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in eastern Al Jazirah state, saying they targeted civilians and violated international humanitarian law.

The ministry said in a statement the attacks had “targeted innocent unarmed civilians, including children, women and the elderly, and led to the displacement of thousands from their homes.”

It reiterated Egypt’s position that Sudan’s national institutions, the army, must be preserved to ensure the country’s unity and safety.

Cairo renewed its call for an immediate ceasefire and implementation of the Jeddah Declaration, a deal to protect civilians, signed by the RSF and Sudan’s army in the Saudi city in May 2023.

“Egypt spares no effort, in cooperation with partners, to stop the bloodshed of the brotherly Sudanese people and help them overcome their ordeal,” the statement said.

Egypt is the first Arab and neighbouring country to publically denounce the RSF atrocities against civilians in Al Jazirah state.

The RSF’s attacks in Al Jazirah state have drawn widespread condemnation from international organizations, who accuse the paramilitary force of abuses, including the displacement of civilians, killings and sexual violence.
