November 24, 2008 (JUBA) – Meeting of the Joint High Political and Executive Committee between the National Congress Party (NCP) and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) resumed in Khartoum on Monday.
The meeting is expected to thrash out a number of outstanding issues in the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) and will be co-chaired by the Vice President of the Republic, Ali Osman Mohamed Taha and the Government of Southern Sudan’s Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar Teny.
Before his departure to Khartoum on Sunday leading a high level SPLM delegation to the national capital, Dr. Machar revealed that the Committee will first listen to reports from various sub-committees and resolve on the issues tackled.
Among the outstanding issues to be debated and resolved on by the peace partners are expected to include review and repeal of Laws that are not in conformity with the CPA and Interim National Constitution (INC).
These Laws include among others, National Security Law, Press and Media Law, Code of Criminal Procedure Law, Code of Civil Procedure, Penal Code and Workers and Trade Union Act.
SPLM officials want those Laws repealed before the conduct of the forthcoming general elections next year.
