Sudan’s FM says meetings with UN envoy successful

KHARTOUM, 18 March 18, 2004 (SUNA) — Foreign Minister Dr Mustafa Uthman Isma’il has described as successful and important the talks which were held between the envoy of the UN secretary-general, Muhammad Sahnun, and Sudanese officials, adding that the UN’s official talks came at a time when Sudan is looking forward for the signing of a final peace agreement.

In a press statement Wednesday , the foreign minister said the Sudanese officials have shared identical views with the envoy of the UN secretary-general with regard to supporting Sudan’s peace.

Responding to a question by Suna, Dr Isma’il said that the talks with Sahnun underscored that the monitoring of the peace agreement implementation will take place according to Article (6) of the UN Charter which deals with the formation of monitoring teams, contrary to Article (7) which deals with the imposition of peace by force.

He said that Article (6) relates to building of peace, the monitoring of cease-fire, as well as the resettlement of refugees and displaced and the rehabilitation and re-building process.

Dr Isma’il said that Sahnun besides his talks at the Foreign Ministry has met during his visit to Khartoum with the president of the republic and that technicians accompanying him held talks with technicians at the Ministry of Defence, and concerned organs and the UN offices in Khartoum.

He said that Sudan welcomes support to it during the post-war era. The minister pointed out that Sahnun has affirmed the keenness of the UN secretary-general to boost the realization of stability and balanced development in Sudan.
