Sudanese journalists urge union to quit political coalition

Sudanese journalists vote for the first time to election a democratic union on August 29, 2022

January 7, 2025 (PORT SUDAN) – Dozens of Sudanese journalists have urged their elected union to withdraw from a civilian political coalition and steer clear of political entanglements, according to a memorandum seen by Sudan Tribune.

The petition, signed by 100 members of the Sudanese Journalists Syndicate, was submitted to the syndicate’s president, executive committee, and council. It comes ahead of an executive committee meeting where the matter is expected to be debated.

The journalists called on the syndicate to refrain, in its official capacity, from joining any political coalitions, explicitly citing its current involvement with the Taqaddum coalition (Coordination of Democratic Civilian Forces).

They emphasized the importance of the syndicate avoiding any future political alliances to safeguard its neutrality, independence, and its core mission. The signatories, however, affirmed their commitment to freedom, freedom of the press and expression, and the rights of journalists and human rights.

The journalists argued in their memorandum that Sudan’s current political climate necessitates the syndicate maintaining an equal distance from all political factions. They stressed their desire to keep trade union activities strictly professional, avoiding any political overlap. They believe this is crucial to protecting journalists’ rights, safeguarding their professional freedoms, and advocating for rights in general without becoming embroiled in political alliances or rivalries.

The signatories stated that their demand stems from a deep belief in the syndicate’s mission and the need for its complete independence, particularly given the heightened tensions and polarization resulting from the ongoing conflict in Sudan.

The journalists also voiced their support for the syndicate’s role in contributing to peace efforts and collaborating with other elected unions, or those preparing for elections, to forge a unified professional front.

The signatories underscored that the syndicate, as an elected body representing its members, must carry out its union duties in a unified manner.

Founded officially in May 2024, Tagadum includes political groups and civil society organisations. The coalition calls to end the ongoing war in Sudan between the army and the paramilitary RSF, resume democratic transition and reestablish civilian rule.
