Sudanese army advances in Khartoum, captures strategic residential complex
January 12, 2025 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudanese army made further advances in Khartoum on Sunday, capturing a strategic residential complex from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) after heavy fighting, the army said.
The army’s Armoured Corps pushed north from its base in the Al-Shajara military area towards central Khartoum, part of a broader operation launched on September 26 to regain control of the capital.
“The heroes of the Armoured Corps in the Al-Shajara military area have seized control of the Al-Rawad residential complex,” the army said on its official Facebook page. It added that it had inflicted heavy losses on the RSF, which it refers to as a “rebel militia,” while respecting the safety of public and private property under international law and rules of engagement.
Videos posted online by army soldiers and reviewed by Sudan Tribune showed troops deployed inside the sprawling complex of high-rise buildings.
The complex is situated south of the Rumaila in central Khartoum, a strategic location only 2 kilometres from the Nile and 5 kilometres from Khartoum Airport.
The residential area had been used by the RSF as a strategic base to deploy snipers and launch attacks on the Armoured Corps, according to residents.
The RSF launched major but ultimately unsuccessful attacks in August and November 2023 in an attempt to capture the Armoured Corps base, sustaining significant losses in personnel and equipment, according to the army and military analysts.
The RSF did not immediately comment on Sunday’s developments.
