Sudanese army claims partial control of key Khartoum bridge

February 24, 2025 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudanese army said on Monday it had partially seized control of the Soba bridge, east of Khartoum, following days of intense fighting with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The army and allied forces resumed operations in the East Nile region three days ago, engaging the RSF in fierce battles in Soba East and Marabie Al-Sharif. They secured control of those areas and reached the eastern approach of the Soba bridge, prompting an RSF withdrawal towards Soba West.

“We report complete control to the General Commander of the Armed Forces from the Soba bridge,” said Abu Aqila Keikel, commander of the Sudan Shield Forces, a pro-army militia, in a video circulated on pro-military platforms.

Keikel vowed to push further into Khartoum and the East Nile region to dislodge the RSF, and urged residents of Soba East to return to their homes.

The army’s advance on the Soba bridge aims to facilitate a push towards 60th Street, a key RSF stronghold in central Khartoum, as well as the central market and southern districts of the capital.

In recent weeks, the army and its allies have regained control of the Khartoum Bahri locality and significant parts of the East Nile region, while making gradual progress in Omdurman. They are also attempting to retake central Khartoum, which houses the presidential palace and key state institutions.
