Sudan to inaugurate a new oil field in the south

January 18, 2009 (KHARTOUM) — Sudan announced today that a new oil field will begin production in the Upper Nile state with a capacity of 50,000 barrels per day.

The field named ‘Qamari’ will be opened in March by Sudanese president Omer Hassan Al-Bashir, the director of exploration at the Ministry of Energy and Mining Azhari Abdullah told reporters today.

The Sudanese official said that the field which costs $30 million contains 75 wells, 23 with an operating capacity of 30,000 bpd that will go up to 50,000 bpd upon the completion of other wells.

Sudan is targeting average crude oil production of around 500,000 barrels per day (bpd) in 2009, higher than current output of 450,000 to 460,000.

The East African country is heavily dependent on crude exports which represent 65% of its annual revenue. However a severe global financial crisis sent oil prices down more than 76% from its all-time peak of $147.27 reached July 11.

The oil prices drop is likely to slow down any investment in the petroleum sector by oil producing countries worldwide.

The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) has decided on several cuts to oil output in 2008 to halt the drop in process. Sudan is not a member of the oil cartel.

It is a good news that other new oil field is discovered in South Sudan specially in the upper Nile as the reporter put it but to my dismay, i couldn’t believe that the operation of that field is soon going to take place in March 2009 yet the field which has been supplying oil all these times has not made any developemental progress in the South.

Please GOSS leaders, allow me advise you to suspend the opening of that field till 2011 where the Southerners will determine their fate.
Secondly, you Southern leaders would have learned from the stresses made in the 2009 budget where you were forced to reshuffle some of your enployees to a certain given and restricted number of which you are eventually doing now.
The so called Arabs claimed the price cut of oil and yet they are interested to exploit the new field. Why cann’t you find out why is it so?
Sincerely speaking as a Southern i remain opposing the opening of that new field.

    Thanks.

What does the word “Qamari” mean? This is not a Shulluk, Dinka, or Nuer’s word or perhaps may be I am wrong. However, if that appears to be an Arabic word, it got to be removed from the books because there are original names for any place in South Sudan. This extended Arabisation in naming the areas of South Sudan using Arabic names must be put to a stop by enacting land laws that march with local traditions.

It is surprising that the Government of South Sudan does not pay attention to such details. This is how influence comes about. It affects the correct history of places and their names.
