Sudan mine agency reports 40 incidents, 66 casualties since conflict began
April 24, 2025 (KHARTOUM) – Sudan’s National Mine Action Center (NMAC) announced on Wednesday that 40 incidents involving landmine or Explosive Remnants of War (ERW) explosions have been recorded since the conflict began in April 2023, killing 16 people and injuring 50 others in various parts of the country.
Since the conflict erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on April 15, 2023, both sides have reportedly planted hundreds of mines in areas under their control to impede the advance of their adversaries.
The Center’s Director General, Major General Khalid Hamdan, told Sudan Tribune that 40 explosion incidents, caused by either mines or ERW, have been recorded. He stated that the total number of casualties reached 66, comprising 16 fatalities and 50 injuries, occurring in several areas including Khartoum, Hajar al-Asal in River Nile State, Al Jazirah State, and Sennar State.
The Director revealed the destruction of over 12,000 projectiles and 53,000 rounds of small arms ammunition, classified as ERW, since April 2023.
He anticipated that there are likely unreported ERW incidents due to the widespread presence of mines and ERW across many parts of the country.
Hamdan explained that clearance efforts are ongoing, with over 3,000 projectiles already collected. He added that more items are being gathered daily in preparation for their imminent destruction.
He did not rule out the possibility of undiscovered mines in some areas, stressing that NMAC teams are continuing their work alongside teams from the SAF’s Corps of Engineers operating in other regions.
He confirmed that mines have been cleared from some areas in Al Jazirah and Sennar states, the Bahri area of Khartoum, and the Karari and Omdurman localities.
Hamdan stated that mine and ERW removal operations are underway in the East Nile, Khartoum, and Jabal Awliya localities. He added that work will commence in the northern parts of Omdurman, specifically the Al-Salha area and Ambada locality, once these areas are secured, in addition to planned operations in White Nile and North Kordofan states.
