Sudan-Ethiopia joint committee to meet in April

March 24, 2009 (KHARTOUM) — The Sudanese Ethiopian Higher Committee will meet in Addis Ababa next month, Sudan’s foreign ministry said after a meeting with the Ethiopian chargé d’affaires today.

The Sudan-Ethiopia meeting had been scheduled on March 10, but it was delayed without explanation after the issuance of an arrest warrant by the International Criminal Court on March 4 against President Omer Al-Bashir who had to lead the Sudanese delegation.

The next month meetings will evaluate the implementation of the agreements signed in previous sessions and the two countries also will sign a number of agreements and memorandums of understanding dealing with economic, cultural relations as well as security issues.

The meeting of the Ethiopian Sudanese Higher Committee will be held in Addis Ababa on April 11. It will be preceded by a ministerial meeting headed by the foreign ministers of the two neighboring countries on April 9, while the experts’ committees will meet on April 7.

Ambassador Ahmed Tigani the Director of the Department of Border and Foreigners at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday discussed with the Chargé d’affaires Gabr Issyassi the preparations for the meetings of the Joint Commission between the two countries

Tigani said that he discussed with the Ethiopian diplomat existing border problems and ways to resolve all the related issues in particular abuses and acquisitions prior to the meetings of the Joint Higher Committee.

He further said that the meeting dealt with the evaluation of the 11th meeting of the Committee for the development of the Sudan-Ethiopia border in Al-Damazin.

The 11th conference of Sudan–Ethiopia border development concluded its work on March 15 and adopted a series of decisions to boost the bilateral relations between the frontier regions and districts in the areas of security, trade, agriculture and health.
