Sudan’s Salva Kiir and UN’s Qazi discuss 2005 peace implementation

June 4, 2009 (KHARTOUM) – The UN Secretary General special envoy to Sudan voiced concern over challenges that still facing the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) that ended more than two decades of war in the country.

Ashraf Qazi, held talks on the CPA implementation with the Sudanese First Vice President and head of southern Sudan semi-autonomous government, Salva Kiir Mayadrit in Juba on Wednesday June 3.

During his one day visit to Juba, the head of the UN Mission in Sudan met also the newly appointed south Sudan minister of regional cooperation, Oyai Deng Ajak, the speaker of the Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly, James Wani Igga and Nhial Deng, SPLA affairs minister.

The meetings discussed the security situation in the south, elections, DDR and the preparations for the referendum, among other issues, the UNMIS said today.

“I had a very good meeting with the President and this is an important time because we all are preparing for the conference that will take place in Washington later this month,” said the SRSG.”

The US administration convened the signatories of the CPA to discuss on the implementation of the 2005 peace agreement in Washington on June 23. The meeting will be addressed by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and attended by special envoy Scott Gration.

Qazi and other international actors will attend the Washington meeting.

According to UNMIS, Kiir expressed appreciation for the role UNMIS is playing in Jonglei while Qazi reassured him that UNMIS is always ready to assist in every respect with regards to the implementation of the CPA.

Following the deadly tribal clashes last month in Jonglei state where more than 700 people were killed and displaced thousands, the mission dispatched some 120 civilian, military and police personnel as well as humanitarian assistance there.
