Sudan’s Kiir meets with economic cabinet in Khartoum

June 26, 2009 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudanese First Vice President Salva Kiir held a series of meetings with members of the cabinet including finance, energy and agriculture ministers.

The meetings appeared focused on enhancing economic activities in South Sudan, particularly in light of the sharp decline in oil revenue that resulted from the global financial crisis.

The minister of finance and national economy Awad Al-Jaz said he discussed with Kiir the promotion of non-petroleum revenue through customs, taxes and services.

He said that he agreed with the South Sudan finance minister to set up customs stations and tax offices to utilize financial resources that don’t make it to the treasury, Sudan official news agency (SUNA) quoted him as saying.

The president of semi-autonomous South Sudan also discussed with the with the energy and mines minister Al-Zebeir Ahmed Al-Hassan discussed expansion of petroleum production in the South.

Al-Hassan added that the issue of electricity supply in the South as well as obstacles facing oil companies because of orders from governors and local administrations that prevent movement of vehicles and road constructions.

He said that Kiir said that “clear instructions” were given by the oil commission and the Government of Southern Sudan (GoSS) to facilitate the work of these oil companies.

The third meeting took place with the minister of agriculture Abdel-Halim Al-Mutaa’fi who briefed Kiir on the projects undertaken in the South financed by GoSS.

Al-Mutaa’fi is scheduled to visit Juba next week to follow up on the agricultural projects and its technical aspects.
