US delegation visits Jonglei to assess possible investments

July 15, 2009 (BOR TOWN) – A delegation from the United State Agency for International Development (USAID) headed by Acting American Consul General in Juba, Erin Tariot paid a brief visit to Jonglei capital on Tuesday.

The visitors were assessing existing opportunities in agriculture, business, education and health sectors in Bor Town. They further met with state authorities.

The delegation inspected Bor Civil hospital, Bor secondary school and Dr. John Garang Institute of science and technology before the U.S second mission to Bor ended its visit by boarding a plane for Torit, Eastern Equatoria State.

Team leader Erin Tariot said the mission is seeking “broader” comprehension of post war reconstruction in South Sudan where Jonglei state is carrying out two wars against tribal fighting and food shortage.

“We are seeking a broader understanding of the food security in South Sudan,” she stressed.

The visiting delegation was received by Acting Gov. Hussein Mar Nyuot, state ministers and commissioners. After a meeting at the council of ministers’ hall, the team also met chamber of commerce leaders in trying to glance at existing opportunities in the sector.

With tribal feuds and abduction of children, which affects gravely security situation, a time framed foreign investment remains at large.

Staffs from the Universities of Taxes and California were also among the visitors. Janet Mcelligott from the University of California says academic investment could start from the existing institutions in reference to the ailing John Garang Institute of science and technology in Bor.

Taxes University official N. King says his university has signed a letter of cooperation with Dr. John Garang Institute when Prof. Agrey Ayuen Majok, who is still in the U.S with Governor Kuol Manyang Juuk.
