Ugandan president discusses Sudan peace with Swiss official
KAMPALA, April 8, 2004 (Xinhua) — Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni discussed peace efforts in southern Sudan with high-ranking Swiss official on Thursday.
Museveni and Josef Bucher, special representative of the Swiss Foreign Affairs Department, discussed ways of restoring peace and development to southern Sudan, especially an anticipated peace agreement between the Sudanese government and the Sudanese People’ s Liberation Army rebels, which have been fighting against the Khartoum government in the past 20 years in southern Sudan.
The Sudan is to the north of Uganda and Uganda’s anti- government forces, the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), are based in southern Sudan.
In February. the LRA rebels killed more than 200 displaced people in a raid on a camp for displaced people in northern Uganda ‘s Lira district.
The Ugandan government forces have since then pursed the rebels inside southern Sudan to flush them out after securing a green light from the Sudanese government.
