Former Sudan’s PM, UN deputy chief discuss plans to halt conflict

September 20, 2026 (NEW YORK) – Former Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok met with United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed in New York on Sunday to discuss plans to end the country’s war and accelerate humanitarian relief, his coalition said.

Hamdok, who chairs the Civil Democratic Alliance of Revolutionary Forces (Sumood), held talks at U.N. headquarters as part of a diplomatic push during meetings with international officials.

The war between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which broke out in April 2023, has displaced millions and pushed swathes of the population toward famine.

In a statement, Sumood said the discussions centred on ground and humanitarian developments, highlighting the urgent need for unhindered aid delivery across the country.

Hamdok’s delegation urged the U.N. to coordinate fragmented international and regional mediation efforts, linking humanitarian, security and political tracks into a unified process.

The alliance added that lasting peace requires a Sudanese-led civilian political transition that protects national unity and sovereignty.

Mohammed welcomed the efforts of Sudanese civilian groups to end the fighting and engaged positively with the delegation’s proposals, according to the coalition’s statement.

The U.N. has consistently pressed for an immediate ceasefire, civilian protection and expanded humanitarian corridors, alongside efforts to forge a lasting political settlement.
