October 13, 2026 (KHARTOUM) – The chairperson of the African Union, Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye, has invited a Sudanese preparatory dialogue committee to visit his country, the committee’s spokesperson said on Tuesday.

Burundi’s ambassador, Omer Ntezimbere, delivered the invitation during a meeting with the Sudanese-Sudanese Dialogue Preparation Committee at its headquarters in Khartoum.

Osman Mirghani, the committee’s official spokesman, said the panel accepted the invitation as part of regional efforts to facilitate consultations among Sudanese factions and resolve the country’s ongoing crisis.

Mirghani said the initiative aligns with the AU chair’s push to promote mutual understanding, adding that the committee noted Burundi’s strong commitment. He said the visit would take place as soon as possible.

The Burundian envoy had presented his credentials to General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, head of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereign Council, in Khartoum on October 12.

Burhan announced a political-talk initiative in May, followed by the formation of a preparatory committee on August 30.

The Somoud coalition, led by former prime minister Abdalla Hamdok, rejected the initiative and called for negotiations to take place outside Sudan, despite Burhan pledging safety guarantees for anti-war civilian groups.

Somoud said its stance focuses on finding immediate, genuine solutions to halt the conflict, insisting it would not take part in “false solutions that reproduce the crisis or grant political legitimacy to the war and its outcomes.”

The coalition reaffirmed that any political process must end the fighting, address the humanitarian disaster, and pave the way for sustainable peace and a transition to civilian rule.
