Education

South Darfur

Short-term response

? With UNICEF support, the NGO United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) has distributed plastic sheeting for three schools in El Neem camp, benefiting some 1,100 students. The two partners have also completed repairs to four classrooms at Ulmomi Neem girls’ school, for the benefit of nearly 250 children.
Regular activities

? UNICEF provided the State Ministry of Education with 65,000 text books for Grade 1 students in South Darfur, while through a partnership with the NGO Humedica an estimated 4,200 children will benefit from UNICEF-provided exercise books, other classroom stationery and recreational materials.

? Teaching materials were delivered by World Vision to Duma School, while the construction of Saad School is ongoing and Jurof School is more than 50 percent complete.

West Darfur

Regular activities

? UNICEF has provided chalkboards and student materials to benefit 500 internally displaced children studying at schools in Mororo. UNICEF is also providing support for the repair of 16 classrooms in Rungatas that will benefit some 1,500 displaced students.

Food Security and Livelihoods

North Darfur

Short-term response

? General Food and Blanket Supplementary Feeding distribution started in all areas under El Fasher, Kebkabiya and Kutum with distributions going as planned.

? HAC requested WFP to provide a one time ration to farmers from Zam Zam, whose land was occupied this year by IDPs from the South.

? In El Fasher, 106 teachers and cooks have been trained on improved cooking practices.

South Darfur

Short-term response

? The August round of Blanket Supplementary Feeding distributions were completed in Otash camp and all targeted under-five children were given a monthly ration of premix.

? Because of the rainy season, most roads have been difficult to access and WFP experienced difficulties reaching Kubum Cluster (Dagados, Habouba and UM Labosa) with food because of flooding.

? The Merlin team distributed premix to 960 beneficiaries in Yassin and 600 beneficiaries in Seleah who were previously missed because heavy rains had made roads impassable.

Regular activities

? World Vision conducted general food distribution (GFD) with a total of 13,704 beneficiaries receiving 164.489 metric tons in Dereige, Sakali and Sakali West IDP camps, besides 78.337 metric tons of blanket feeding distributed to 14,507 children under five in Otash camp.

? World Vision implemented the following activities during the past week:
o Distributed 7000 tree seedlings at Edd al Fursan community and planted 123 others in the streets.
o Selected 55 beneficiaries for goat distribution and 50 households for chicken distribution at Albalha, Umtola and Gadalhaboob villages, beside 50 others for bee keeping, nine of them women at Galdi community.
o Preparations for animal vaccination for 15,000 livestock at Albiher Galdi and Shadida are ongoing.
o Trained 11 women on poultry management at Rehed el Berdi, while 200 women were selected for poultry training and 20 households were trained on vegetable cultivation at Aldelaib village and given water melon seeds (four ounce) for each household.
o Follow up of chickens distributed to the beneficiaries in Rehed El Berdi locality and agricultural extensions are ongoing.

West Darfur

Regular activities

? Under the General Food Distribution, some 864 metric tonns of mixed commodities have been distributed to 85,000 persons in Geneina, Habila and Mukjar. General Food Distributions for September are planned to start next week in Zalingei and Mornei.

? CRS completed September Blanket Supplementary Feeding distribution in Armankol last week, covering 1,447 beneficiaries.

Health and Nutrition

North Darfur

Short-term response

? WHO continued following up with the State Ministry of Health (SMOH) and UNICEF on the implementation of the rainy season plan. This includes all IDP camps and three month training on awareness raising and community mobilization against the outbreak of communicable diseases. Currently a training is ongoing in Zam Zam camps with WHO technical support

Regular activities

? A monitoring mission to Mellit Rural Hospital was undertaken by WHO to ensure free services for referred IDPs. The findings included:
o free available services is delivered in hospital departments
o X-Ray department operating well with average of three- five cases per day
o Hospital is clean
o Warehouse system and pharmacy is well organized

? WHO continued following up on the implementation of recommendations of the last field mission to Tawila area. The final report was shared with all concerned and a meeting with UNICEF, WHO, UNFPA, SMOH and MSF-S is expected next week to start the action plan.

? This week WHO supported El Fasher Teaching and Saraf Omra (new MoH upgraded hospital) hospital with an assortment of essential medicines (Antibiotics, I.V fluid, analgesic and anti diarrhoeal drugs) estimated for a total of 1447 patients. (Please see the table marked ‡.)

South Darfur

Short-term response

? UNICEF has provided some US$20,000 to cover costs of former NGO staff now employed by the State Ministry of Health in Feina, to ensure continued running of the clinic there.

? A monthly monitoring visit was conducted to Ed Daein Rural Hospital revealed that the hospital needs support in drug management which will be supported by WHO in the near future through technical and on job training. Shortage of laboratory reagents and drugs were also reported and will be enacted upon immediately by WHO

Regular activities

? UNICEF has provided 14 primary health centre kits containing essential drugs and supplied for clinics in Kass and Beliel, as well as supplying malaria diagnosis kits and more than 1,800 cartons of anti-malaria medicines to the State Ministry of Health. UNICEF also provided 800 cartons of nutritional paste to the NGO Tearfund to assist its specialist feeding programmes.

? World Vision implemented the following activities during the past week:
o Handled consultations for 1,697 patients at clinics in Galdi, El Geneina, Galdi, Manawashi, Mershing, Duma and Otash; vaccinated 90 children and provided ante-natal care to 420 pregnant women.
o Treated 577 malnourished children in Manawashi, Mershing and Otash and gave them high energy food and 49 other children were admitted to supplementary feeding centres (SFCs).
o Supervised 19 delivery cases.
o Conducted health education for 20,467 people through community mobilization at Mershing, Manawashi, Otash, Geneina, Duma and Dereige camps as well as 7 sessions at Otash, Duma and Dereige IDP camps.

West Darfur

Regular activities

? The State Ministry of Health, with UNICEF support, conducted a training programme on global growth standards for 50 government nutrition staff.

Non-Food Items (NFIs)

South Darfur

Regular activities

? In South Darfur, SRCS distributed jerry cans and plastic sheeting from the NFI Common Pipeline to IDPs requiring replenishment, supporting 181 households in Abu Karinka, 495 households in Adeila, 100 households in Al Gura, 193 households in Al Mazroub, 220 households in Jad El Sid and 576 households in Sharif. Altogether, a total of 1,765 households were replenished with 5,295 items.

West Darfur

Regular activities

? This week in West Darfur, SRCS distributed essential non-food and emergency shelter items from the NFI Common Pipeline to 441 households of IDPs requiring replenishment in Sisi camp. The IDPs were replenished with jerry cans and plastic sheets.

Protection and Human Rights

South Darfur

Short-term response

? World Vision implemented the following activities during the past week:
o Sensitized 420 women, 45 men and 189 children on children’s issues and rights and gender issues at Manawashi and Mershing Child Friendly Spaces
o Provided care and psychosocial support to 863 children at Child Friendly Spaces (CFS) in Alsalam, Manawashi and Mershing camps
o Conducted adult literacy classes for 702 women in Manawashi, Mershing and Otash, as well as 916 adolescents in Otash camp.

Regular activities

? UNICEF provided a generator to the South Darfur Family and Child Protection Unit, managed by the local police force, to help the unit continue providing valuable assistance to children affected by crime.

? The State Ministry of Education, in collaboration with UNICEF, completed training for 25 staff and head teachers on providing psychosocial support to children.

West Darfur

Regular activities

? As part of an ongoing collaboration between El Geneina Radio (CRLG) and UNICEF, a range of information spots on issues including breast feeding, HIV/AIDS prevention, water purification and peace building were broadcast to an estimated audience of 200,000 listeners.

? The State Ministry of Education and UNICEF officially launched the new HIV life skills curriculum in El Geneina, targeting students in Grades 7-11. A total of 500 schools are taking part in the roll out of the new curriculum, which is designed to provide students with appropriate information on HIV and its prevention.

Water and Sanitation

North Darfur

Regular activities

? Environmental health activities of hand dug wells in El Fasher town are going on with support from WHO and UNICEF. This week the team visited 59 water points and the findings show that 33 (56 percent) water points showed the Free Chlorine Residuals (FCR) 0.2 mg/l to 0.6 mg/l within the standard rate, 12 water points showed 0.1 mg/l which is less than the standard rate, while 14 water points showed nil for the FCR. Remedial action was taken.

South Darfur

Short-term response

? As part of continuing efforts to prevent disease outbreak during the rainy season, the State Water Corporation with UNICEF assistance undertook a number of hygiene-related activities in Kass camp. Nearly 4,000 households were visited in the last week to promote better hygiene practices, while the State Water Corporation, UNICEF and World Vision managed a three day workshop on diarrhoea prevention, solid waste management and water quality conservation for 65 local leaders. Seventy cartons of soap were distributed in the camp to support effective hand washing.

Regular activities

? The State Water Corporation, with UNICEF support, constructed 40 new school latrines in the Kass area, 800 household latrines in Kalma camp and repaired a total of 155 latrines in Ottash and Kass camps. More than 6,500 household visits were made by hygiene education teams in Ottash, Al Salaam, Kass, Mosie and Dereige camps, reaching more than 21,000 people with life-saving messages on hygiene promotion. Mass cleaning campaigns were
also undertaken in Ottash, Kass, Mosie and Dereige.

? World Vision implemented the following activities during the past week:
o Repaired one hand pump, one pipe at Umloata, in Kass locality while maintenance of two water motorized schemes at Duma and Karary is ongoing.
o Completed super contracture of 41 latrines at Khore Abechi community.
o Completed installation of four hand pumps at Bulbul area.
o Conducted a clean-up campaign attended by 547 people in Duma west, Duma, Manawashi and Kass camps. While, a jerry can clean up campaign was conducted in Kass area where 2,548 jerry cans were cleaned.
o Carried out free residual chlorine (FRC) and water quality surveillance at households and water sources levels in Kass camps, Mershing and Manawashi communities.

West Darfur

Short-term response

? Working with the UN Joint Logistics Centre, UNICEF provided more than 1,300 pieces of plastic sheeting for the NGO CRS to enable construction of household latrines in Habila and Mukjar – more than 8,000 people are expected to benefit from the project. The State Water Corporation, with UNICEF assistance, also repaired 35 household latrines in Krinding 1 camp, ensuring adequate sanitation for a further 210 people.

Regular activities

? The State Water Corporation, assisted by UNICEF, completed drilling of seven hand pumps in Habila, and provided soap supplies to help hygiene promotion activities for some 22,000 people in Krinding 1 camp.

Population movements and returns

North Darfur

Short-term response

? IOM team held a debriefing meeting on verification of returns conducted in August in Kutum Area of Anka, Birmaza, Deessa and Damrats Msiri and Al Manara. The mission findings point out cases of seasonal returns, inter-generational return/IDPs and few cases of new arrivals in Msiri and Al Manara Damrats.
