JEM rebels urge African Union to support Darfur Joint Mediator

November 22, 2009 (PARIS) — The Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) has urged the Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union to support the ongoing efforts exerted by the AU-United Nations Mediator saying any obstruction to his work would prolong the six year conflict.

JEM delegation in Doha concluded meetings with the mediation on a joint strategy for the peace talks. The rebel group despite its boycott of the peace process in the past months reiterated its support to Mr. Djibril Bassole and commitment to the Doha process facilitated by Qatar.

“We call on the African Union and the United Nations to deal in harmony with Darfur issue and we appeal on the African Union to support the efforts of the mediation as well as to avoid any struggle over Darfur dossier,” said JEM spokesperson Ahmed Hussein Adam who was speaking to Sudan Tribune from the Qatari capital Doha.

“Any difference between the AU and the UN would prolong the peace process and be at the expense of Darfur people,” he further said.

The chairman of the AU High Level Panel on Darfur (AUPD) Thabo Mbeki and the AU Commission Chairman, Jean Ping, are accused of “fighting a silent battle” with the UN to take the Darfur file away from the world body.

Last month the AU Peace and Security Council (PSC) held meeting in Abuja to discuss a report compiled by a panel led by Mbeki on justice and peace in Darfur. Mbeki with the support of Ping had been suspected of acting to prevent him to deliver a speech during the meeting.

Abuja meeting adopted the report and also designated Mbeki to head an implementation mechanism of the findings of the panel in the areas of peace and justice.

JEM delegation concluded today a series of talks with the mediation on the peace process to work out a road map for the peace process. The move came after different initiatives to unify and involve rebel factions in the peace talks.

Ahmed said they agreed to resume the peace process without waiting indefinitely the outcome of the reunification process initiated by regional and international facilitators.

He also added they are no longer demanding the improvement of humanitarian conditions and the release of their fighters imprisoned in the jails of Khartoum to resume talks with the Sudanese government.

However, he added, the mediation should continue to press the government to implement the goodwill agreement signed in February 2009 particularly these two points of the confidence building deal.

Doha witnessed this week a four day consultative meeting for Darfur civil society groups. The meeting was attended by delegation from neighboring, European and US delegations.

The rebel official said they met delegations from Eritrea, European Union, Canada, Netherlands, United Kingdom, and United States.

“We discussed the political situation in the country including the upcoming election of April 2010. We stressed that the electoral process under the current situation would lead to a political crisis and not democratic transition.”

The last meeting by African Union Peace and Security Council held last month in Abuja endorsed the report compiled by the AU high level panel on Darfur (AUPD) to create a roadmap for resolving the conflict.

The panel was headed by former South African president Thabo Mbeki who is also the head of the implementation mechanism.

Darfur has turn as a warring field neither Janjiweed militias or African Union. The fact is that, there is no role seen that AU had play since deployment of African Union stationaries in Darfur.

However, the seeking of harsel peace process in mediation of Darfur to go on smoothly, then we need to quil all the political parties involved and briefs them not attack again.

Darfur is another Afghanistan, Modagishu and Iraq in Sudan, people die minutely because Sudan government sponsors all those militias to attack innocent in Darfur.

Eventhough Darfur play their part in South war, then Southerners need to help Darfuris to mediating Darfur peace because Southerners are more peacemakers in the World and Africa as in particularly. They So-called government of national unity are they n=one creating to the world, Darfur need to contact southern government.
