Over 19 Somali including ministers killed by suicide bomber

December 3, 2009 (ADDIS ABABA) – At least 19 people were killed in the Somali capital today when a suicide bomber dressed as a woman attacked a university graduation ceremony.

The blast during a graduation ceremony of medical students of the Banadir University inside a Shamo in the Somali capital is seen as the most serious attack on the transitional government. The pro-Al-Qaeda Al-shebab are suspected of being behind the attack.

Among the killed people three Cabinet ministers, three journalists and graduating doctors. The killed ministers are Somalia’s female health minister, Qamar Aden Ali, Education Minister Ahmed Abdulahi Waayeel and Higher Education Minister Ibrahim Hassan Addow all died in the suicide blast in Shamo Hotel. Sports Minister Saleban Olad Roble was critically injured.

Hours after the blast, Somali President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed condemned the suicide bomb attack saying “We condemn that evil act perpetuated by people working on foreign ideas.” He further blamed the Islamist group Al-Shebaab for the attack.

People who attended the ceremony said the suicide bomber entered inside the hotel disguised as a veiled woman. Then he sat listening to the speeches before approaching the podium and blowing himself up.

Over 60 peacekeepers have been killed since they were deployed in March 2007 to protect strategic sites in the seaside city.

A joint statement from the European Union, the regional InterGovernmental Authority on Development, the League of Arab States, the UN and the United States condemned the attack as “cowardly acts of terrorism”.

“The horrific attack is another demonstration of the extremists’ complete disregard for human life,” the statement said.

This is pure cowardly attack, whoever send this bomber should be brought to justice, killing civilians including doctors, nurses who are the same people who were going to help somali, i think Somali people have lost there way seriously, if they start to kill the people who are the backbone of their society how will they ever rise up to be a better country? as fighter or militant, you have to have a clear objective not to target innocent civilians but to target the authorities or the security forces only which military and police, blowing up a bomb in a graduation ceremony were many of the victim do not even know what is goingon. Arabs will never help Somali, they send in terrorists from Suadi Arabia, Egypt, Sudan,Yemen, Pakistan and so on, instead of helping somalia build their country, they encourage the poor somalis to fight eachother and blow eachother up and kill their people, this is good for the foolish somalis.
