By Richard Ruati

December 7, 2009 (Yambio) – SPLM office in Western has issued press statement urging the entire citizenry to remain calm.

The statement from the SPLM State Secretariat in Western Equatoria, released by the State SPLM Assistant Secretary for Information and Communication Mr. Dominic Utino Ginau requested all Western Equatorians people “to remain calm until further notice.”

The SPLM calls in Western Equatoria State came as many leading members of the party have been arrested during a rally in Khartoum, sparking widespread anger.

Among those held in the Sudanese capital was the secretary general of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), Pagan Amum.

People in the state’s main town of Yambio are going about their normal business. Shops, offices and schools are functioning. However, State officials are scheduled officials are set to attend an emergency security meeting in the state.

Tensions have been rising between the SPLM and the NCP in recent months over the murder of an NCP senior operative in Yambio late Miriam Biringi allegedly killed by unknown gunmen, relationship between the SPLM and NCP in the state has not been cemented well since then. This latest political wrangling between the NCP and SPLM may fuel yet mistrust in Western Equatoria.

Generally on the streets of Yambio many people who expressed support for the SPLM rally in Khartoum, condemning the arrest and NCP dominance in the political arena of southern Sudan.

This calmness may not be a surprise, because the people of Western Equatoria are always the peaceful in the southern Sudan.

Following the arrests, protesters in the southern towns of Rumbek and Wau set fire to NCP offices. Gunshots were heard close to those offices.

Sudan is set to hold its first general elections in April 2010.

Next year’s vote will be the first presidential, parliamentary and local elections in 24 years.

Why are people surprised? Equatorians for the most part, are Congolese and Ugandans that don’t have much stakes in this issues! That said, there is small pocket of genuine Southern Sudanese in Equatoria.
