South Sudan leads voter registration

December 8, 2009 (KHARTOUM) — The National Election Commission today announced Southern Sudan as the leading region in voter registration with 82% describing it as highest number in the country.

The commission which will announce the definitive figures of the voter registration on Thursday, said eighty two percent of the voting population in South Sudan has been registered summing up to seventy-five percent of registered voters all over the country.

Southern Sudan witnessed important mobilizations during the electoral operation as the registration in the semi-autonomous region will also be requested to take part in the 2011 referendum on self-determination.

Official sources from the commission further revealed to the official SUNA that total figure of registered voters in the whole country are 14, 757443, adding that process of publication and objections to the registry starts on Tuesday.

Mawien Kuc, Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, National Election Commission Chairperson, told Sudan Tribune he was busy with tallies to get exact figures of the registered voters in the state but estimated to be over one million.

“We will have over one million people registered and ready to take part in the next national election scheduled to take place in April 2010,” he said.

Similarly, Bak Lual, state minister for communications and information said believed that the state has gone extra mile in mobilization of local people to turn out for registration.

“I am telling you that we really committed our resources for proper mobilization of our people during registration,” he said stressing he personally participated in the registration process in his constitution.

The official who appreciated the work done by the team said this registration notwithstanding some shortfalls in forms and registration materials challenged the result of last census.

The minister continued to say wondered what will the people who hurriedly went out with result giving less population to the state of Northern Bahr el Ghazal say.

“I do not know what they will say about such inspiring result in our population just in few months,” he said stressing last population census was not properly conducted. There were a lot of problems attached to it when it was being conducted.

I think the Southern Sudan’s population will be close to 15-17 million if combining with none qualified to vote.

Now we can make Omer bashir go, 75% total country vote in the south and we can add about 15% from the north , the alliance will have about 90% of total vote in the country, so NCP can go home now , but we all know they want to rig the elections by any means nessecary.
