January 4, 2010 (KHARTOUM) — Local authorities from southern Sudan state of Western Bahr el Ghazal have confirmed resumption of students in classes and dismissed allegation of reported killings at campus.
Speaking from Wau, Kon Uguak, state official spokesperson and minister of information and communications said calm returned to the university since Sunday evening.
“I have twice been to the university campus today and atmosphere there was peaceful and friendly,” he said adding he participated in discussions encouraging student to sit exams.
“They have taken exams this morning and are ready to sit the rest tomorrow and as per schedules,” he stressed.
Asked how about the culprit, Uguak said he has been detained and police is investigating the incident. “This is a police case, let nobody confuse this with tribalism or any other act, it is criminal case. It is an isolate incident,” he commented.
The minister also dismissed any death saying none of the students died.
“It was just an assassination attempt, the suspects was not killed but an innocent student colleague whom they share dormitory was mistakenly cut but did not die. He is alive,” he said.
The accused Equatorian allegedly cut throat of an innocent student colleague from Dinka Pan Aru in Unity State, Upper Nile region who sleeps next to suspects in the same dormitory.
The incident sparked fears among Equatoria colleagues fearing retaliatory attack prompting them to walk out of the university campus seeking safety from police.
The state authorities swiftly managed to intervene and contained the situation from escalation. Awad Juma, state deputy governor and minister of administration, local government and legal affairs , said the security situation has returned to its normalcy.
“Talks were held and most of the students who fear retaliatory attacks were convinced by most of their colleagues during discussions and so accepted to resume and took lectures and exams.”
“It is normal now, there is no fear of any retaliation,” he added.
The minister also assured adequate safety for Equatoria students saying his government has deployed forces to provide security to them at the campus.

Southerners must learn the rule of law if they aspire to build a viable state of South Sudan. Criminal cases must not be associated with the tribals feud.
Whoever kill a person must be held accountable as an individual, the culture of revenge base on tribal connection is unacceptable in the modern World.

Lets not blindfold every issue behind tribal matter. This criminal incident must be investigated properly, and those behind the unwanted act must be removed to face minimum charges for attempting to kill our own brother from Greater Bor. Whether Equatoria or dinkas who is convicted of criminal act must be punished as a message of proper use of law in South Sudan. I advise my dinkas or Equatorian brothers to treat the case as a minor problems, they must not make any revenge to either side. Warning of any further attempt must be issue to both sides. I want only those behind savage attack to face their problems and the rest of students must continue their way of studies with peace and unity as one. The article lack more details about the cause of problems, its very hard to judge what type of punishment should be apply to that student. I want the case to be treated fair without discrimination of being dinkas or Equatorians. I hope more information about the root cause of the problems will be availabe after investigation.
New Year Message
Time for tribalism has gone, 2010 is not a time to generalise tribe or community instead of one person. It is time to focus on the real issue far from tribal criticism, political party criticism, leaders criticism, and very far from abuses or insults. We should also debate far from abuses of any single commenter on ST forum, to myself I want to be a man of tolerance, peace, responsbility, respect, forgiveness, love, unity and courage . It is time to get serious and work for the betterment of my nation South Sudan (New name). I didn’t change myself because of pressure or whatsoever, it could be my 2010 resolution. For now lets start new year with fresh mind and positive ideas that will improvement the managment of South Sudan, childish comments must be ignored. Some individual comment aggressively when they are defeated in debate, this spirit must be abandon. We are here to play a game ie you get defeated or you defeat others defends on the article and the extend of your debate, but don’t insult people. This is my new year message to ST viewers, contributors, pseuds, readers and editor.

People should understand that this is a university boy who needs to slaughter his roommate!! He has a very concrete reason for that action if investigation is going to be carried out well. The so called accused might have done something wrong, that aroused somebody’s anger. I hope tribalism should excuse us in this case and let the security team works alone to find out the cause.

These students must know that they are future leaders and that the University is an intellectual center not where to practice killing.

The way this news report have been written, sound like encouraging tribalism, first of all bor in not in upper nile, its in jongole state, also a fight between two students cannot be considered as a fight between two tribes, like if a ugandan student fight a sudanese student, this cannot be considered as a war between uganda and sudan,this is really uncivilized news reporting at work.
