Sudan welcomes UN Human Rights Commission resolution
KHARTOUM, April 24, 2004 (Sudan Tribune) — The minister of information and communication, Al-Zahawi Ibrahim Malik, has described the resolution passed yesterday by the UN Human Rights Commission in Geneva which exonerated Sudan from human rights violations as a triumph for truth.
The minister said the support given by fraternal and friendly nations to Sudan was a backing by nations which strive for truth, freedom and international solidarity in safeguarding human rights, saying the resolution was far from political agenda.
Al-Zahawi said the work of those who tried to place Sudan under the 9th article and those who were striving to internationalize the Darfur problem, in order to achieve a hidden agenda, the Sudanese radio reported.
The minister commended the efforts of the countries which supported Sudan at the Human Rights Commission, which resulted into the vindication of Sudan. He pointed out that this move would promote stability, peace and development in the country.
On Friday in Geneva, the top UN human rights forum adopted a softly worded text on the alleged atrocities during the civil war in the Darfur region.
Fifty members of the UN Commission on Human Rights approved the document drawn up as a compromise between the European Union and a bloc of African nations, prompting the United States to demand in vain a second vote for stronger action.
