NBGS candidate rejects intimidation against his supporters

February 20, 2010 (KHARTOUM) — General Dau Aturjon Nyuol, leader of the group of independent candidates in Northern Bahr el Ghazal Satet (NBGS) has broken his silence saying he will not tolerate intimidation and physical abuse of his supporters by security forces.
“Who knows, he jokingly said, may be those who fear elections stand better chance of winning upcoming elections if their programs work the magic to convince electorates at the voting day.”
The Governor of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, Paul Malong Awan Anei, who is also the SPLM candidate for governor, has on Thursday evening banned independent candidates from holding their electoral campaign rally scheduled to take place on Friday 19 in Aweil town without giving reasons for stoppage.
“Governor Malong Awan is in Juba and acted through his deputy in collaboration with director of police. All they microphones mounted on vehicles were removed and people who were making announcement were asked to stop and put behind bars,” said Honorable Deng Athian from Aweil town on Friday.
Observers say the current tension between southern Sudan ruling party and independent candidates from the SPLM who contest the selection process operated by the Political Bureau could lead to violence particularly most of the independent contenders are supported by their clans and tribes.
General Dau calling on citizens and his supporters to avoid escalation and to react responsibly in the event there are misunderstanding between supporters. “Elections are elections and home is home. Where will these people who are trying to cause instability go after elections,” he posed.
“Let us run it peacefully,” he said; adding National Election Commission has rules and regulations that guide contestants and not unauthorized individuals taking responsibilities of the commission.
However, Honorable Deng Thiep Akok currently in Juba said denial of Friday’s rally was an unacceptable. “Our people should continue to resist and let them come out in their numbers again because it is their right to support whoever they think as candidate of their choice,” he said.
“This shows (SPLM) Electoral College and political bureau intention is nothing but cheap resorts to again rig election as they have done in the selection result,” he said.
He said SPLM official nominees, particularly incumbent governor fear to allow such rallies because all secrets against public majority will be exposed. “Our people have sacrificed more lives and we still need to do the same otherwise there will no hope if we allow individuals to manage southern affairs particularly Mading Aweil to their likings”.

This a very strong man, I wonder why doesn’t the Political Bureau want strong people to represent the SPLA? Obviously he is not a yes man!
In all communist countries you only see people raisng their arms, saying YES!No opinion, no dicussion, no point of view!
They do not want somebody to come and inquire where did 8 billion of dollars has gone!!
The jalabbi Yasir Arman is financing his election campagin from the money of the starving southerners, to raise the red flag on the Khartoum Palace!The guy hadn’t got a penny when he ran away from Khartoum to take refugee with the Spla, now he is a hero, with a ver fat pocket!Never mind ,if the South is burned up and down, who cares, he will come back home with few millions in his pocket!or at least some investment like a hotel in Nairobi!

Why are you people quick to forget the worthiness of a person you are not under a threat? I thought Aweil people would give Paul Malong his due respect and honour for all his sacrificed that he endorsed to the protection of Aweil people during the time of war. Surely, he does not deserve your rude insults and disrespect.

Elections are elections, that mean it is like playing football, there are winners and losers. Home is home as he said (Dau)which mean, he who will cause violent will be also caught up too.
If I was to be in NBGS, I would have made the ballot box to determin who will win the elections and he who won shows that he is the right person chosen by the people of NBGS to lead them. Dau Aturjong is right.

I think Mr. Dau and the like should understand that people like him who have joined forces with Lam Akol have lost our sympathy. Dau and others may have geniune complain, but there is nothing more important than working for the united position to remove the threat of giving a chance to the janjaweeds waiting to exploit any situation to derail our hard-won freedom.
We heard very clearly from Lam that he wants to work with you and other independent candidates to form the next government in Juba. Oh, yes, that is a dangerous situation. Lam has condemned the people of South Sudan to eternal slavery, and now he wants to come to Juba through independent candidates like Mr. Dau to implement his agenda. I think we got the message, and it is up to us to choose between Lam’s destruction and the SPLM’s program of total freedom for the People of South Sudan.
