Lam Akol to launch election campaign in Juba next week

February 28, 2010 (JUBA) – The former Foreign Minister of Sudan and leader of the breakaway Sudan People’s Liberation Movement for Democratic Change (SPLM-DC), Dr. Lam Akol Ajawin, is expected to launch his election campaign next week in Juba.

Dr. Akol who currently resides in Khartoum is also expected to participate in the forthcoming inter-parties dialogue which is scheduled to take place on the 3rd March.

The political parties in the South will discuss the code of conduct for the elections as many of them complain of harassment by the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM).

Lam Akol launched this Saturday his electoral campaign in Malakal, capital of Upper Nile State, where he pledged if elected President of Southern Sudan Government to curb corruption, promote democratic freedoms economic development in the semi-autonomous region.

During the launch of his election campaign on Wednesday in Juba, the First Vice President of Sudan and President of the Government of Southern Sudan, Salva Kiir Mayardit, who is the SPLM presidential candidate for Southern Sudan, assured that all political parties in the South would be allowed to campaign freely.

He said he would also wish to see Lam Akol, his only challenger in the elections for the post of the President, conducting his campaign in the Southern Sudan’s capital.

Major General Gier Chuang Aluong, minister of Internal Affairs told the press that the Southern Sudan Police Service would provide the necessary protection to Dr. Lam Akol if he launches his campaign in Juba.

Gier said in a press conference he held on Saturday that there are more than six thousand (6,000) personnel of the Police Service who are trained to protect the exercise of the elections in Southern Sudan.

He added that the Police Service has been supported by the Government of National Unity in Khartoum.

This week, Dr. Lam’s party office in Renk, Upper Nile state, was reportedly ransacked by SPLM supporters.

Some elements of the Joint Integrated Units (JIUs) in Malakal had earlier torn his pictures posted along the streets of the town.

It is yet to be seen whether his supporters in Juba and elsewhere will be freely allowed to move and rally behind him during his campaigns.

Hi Dinka Boy & Ajang Aguer,

Let us not be politically bias, tribalistic and ignorant of the fact that southern sudan is for all southerners.

Whoever did join SPLM/A should get a credit for our struggle but we should also appreciate that others did contribute to the struggle in different ways.I think many people can become SPLM memebers if there are good policies and faireness in giving all opportunities to ourselves to develop the south.

Dr. Lam Akol is a son of southern sudan and he can politically coperate with any political party in the north as long as he adhere to identity of people of southern sudan.

Tell me who does not coperate with nothern parties including SPLM? SPLM is governing the country with NCP and they have political contacts with other opposition parties in the nothern.

If you want peace in the southern sudan you must learn how to accommodate other ideas from non memebers of SPLM.You will not rule the southern sudan with the notion of one party system.
Never will you succeed to dictate southern sudanese people as you wish.Expect civil war in the south if you are so stubborn as a party.

No one tribe can ever take things in their hands for long.

“He said he would also wish to see Lam Akol, his only challenger in the elections for the post of the President, conducting his campaign in the Southern Sudan’s capital.” What happened to the Presidential Order? I thought somebody somewhere was undermining the Higher Court and its decision, as well as NEC decision!

You know, that is why one should think of whatever he/she is about to say before saying it and not sticking to it. Somebody somewhere should tell me, as a southern Sudanese patriot, why should I be forced to vote for such a brainless creature? Southern Sudan has many good leaders and we should not settle for such a mediocre under any circumstance. Until we change our ways of doing politics drastically and strive for better we are ever trailing.

    Hi Dinka bias,

You should know that Dr Lam Akol was the only true southern sudan son who defused Salva Kiir stubbornness when he wanted to create a political defiance after the CPA signature.

You could be a compaigner for tribalistic domination but it is not going to work. You are wasting your time. All of us are for our motherland(south) and the only difference between is what ways we play politics. There is no New sudan. There is only southern sudan.

People should know that Dr.Lam is a leader like any other south sudanese. He should be allowed to campaign and who knows he might win the election. Those gangs in Juba are not better than him. All human beings do mistakes and Lam’s 1991 history should not tight his hands back and leave the country to be robbed by those greedy dooms in Juba. GOSS officials only know how to calculate expenses but not profit.

Yeah? And say what? He doesn’t think the South is ready to rule herself. Isn’t it an absolute contradiction to think otherwise and campaign to be the leader of those who you think don’t have no system to govern themselves?!

I think he should campaign for NCP seat instead. Ooh I forgot he was sent to derail the South’s progress towards independence. Well, his time is up. I think it’s time for the Southerners to say loud and clear what “We Want” and NOT what the North want.

I say WE WANT OUR INDEPENDECE and OUR FREEDOM!

Lam Akol is free to launch his campaign no one will ask him, as long as everything is according to the law t hen there iwll be no reason to stop him. As the interior minister said Lam will even get police escorts when he launch his campaign, this is going to be a free and fair election, so that those who loose should not complain.
