BREAKING NEWS: Taban Deng seizes NEC office in Bentiu, refuses to accept defeat

April 20, 2010 (BENTIU, Unity state) – The incumbent caretaker governor of the oil-rich Unity state has refused to accept defeat in the gubernatorial elections, threatening the State High Elections Committee to declare him the winner irrespective of results.

The overall results received by the electoral body in the state have shown that his main challenger, Angelina Teny, is far ahead of him by more than 24,000 extra votes.

An official close to NEC office in Bentiu who spoke on condition of anonymity told Sudan Tribune that governor’s security officers had controlled the NEC’s branch office and were conducting forceful dialogue with the electoral staff, threatening them to declare Taban as winner.

He said senior officials in the state were consulting with the President of the Government of Southern Sudan, Salva Kiir Mayardit to intervene and allow for the free and fair announcement of the gubernatorial results in the state.

“Taban Deng Gai should be told to accept defeat in a democratic and peaceful atmosphere,” the official added.

The gubernatorial candidates were scheduled to sign for the elections results today (Tuesday) in the NEC’s office during which losers were expected to accept defeat before announcement of the winner.

State officials across the country were also making consultations to respond to the situation and avoid any resort to violence until the issue is resolved peacefully.

We must keep peace for the sake of our future in order not to fall into the hands of our worse enemies. Mr. Deng then should accept defeat as an act of political wisdom.

There is problem here in this less SPLM state.
The forceful losing of honorable governor Taban Deng Gai means alot to the the State of Unity State. He did great during his governorship, but the hatred force him to lose. Aneglina is less leader than Taban according to my understanding.
I witness Deng Admininstration in Itang ;therefore, he is a great leader.
    Thanks

This is a despicable act and should be a warning to all Southerners that think an Oasis will be found out of the Independence of the South. If there isn’t radical change, the rule of the jungle will continue under this corrupt SPLM.

I think it is time for Gov. Taban to give it up and plot his political comeback. His adversaries have been smarter and he has been continuously losing all kinds of elections including the one in which SPLM state chairpersons were elected. He should sit back and try to learn new ways of playing electoral politics. He can be accomodated by Goss in other capacities as a member of SPLM. There are several ways to serve one’s country. Let one strive to serve the people and get power as a result rather than seek power in order to serve people.

Taban Deng Need to understand that he was one of the people who signed the Comprehensive Peace Agreement which includes the clause of free and fair election. He need to accept the defeat if at all Angelina Teny had defeated him in the is election.

It is time to allow a free passage to a new leadership in order to allow us to prepare for the Referendum 2011.

BREAKING NEWS: Taban Deng seizes NEC office in Bentiu, refuses to accept defeat
What a sad news for the people of Unity State. Taban want to hold on to the governorship until he dies. Theses are types of leaders we have as African and President Kiir must discourage these types of actions and move Taban peacefully. Our people can’t afford bloodshed again.

There is such a brighter future for him (Taban) and he can come back again next time. This action may even hurt his political ambition and our party, SPLM in general.

Unity State is neither Taban’s property nor SPLM, it belongs to people and the people have spoken. Taban should just arrange peaceful transition and evacuate the palace/mansion.

    Dear Southerners,

If this is true and not rumors, I think Cdr Taban needs to concede and congratulate Ms. Angelina. I’m one of Taban supporter, but I think (here) democracy should have a chance and let it prevails so that all of us can sit good examples for others to follow in Africa. We don’t need violence and troubles to plague any places in the South. Let’s put our political differences aside and build Southern Sudan. whether it be Bentiu, Rumbek, Bor, Juba, or anywhere in the South, is still our lands & people. So let’s all be winners and no losers. Thanks

    Kumi,
