Sudanese Parliament postpones approval of Referendum Commission members

June 14, 2010 (KHARTOUM) — The National Legislature has postponed the approval of the appointed president and members of the referendum Commission as scheduled today after an objection raised by the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement against one of its members.

The two chambers of the Sudanese parliament had to endorse the members of the Referendum Commission Monday in order to begin the preparation for the conduct of the last step in the implementation of the 2005 peace agreement.

In accordance with the Southern Sudan Referendum Act passed on December 29, 2009, the Commission is composed of the Chairperson, his Deputy and seven members to be appointed by the President with the approval of the First Vice-President.

The Sudanese constitution requires the simple majority of the National Legislature to approve the nomination of the members of the Commission.

The SPLM has objected the appointment of Taj Alsir Mohamed Saleh as a member of the Commission because he is a member of the Democratic Unionist Party, the official SUNA reported today.

The DUP of Mohamed Osman Al-Merghani said opposed to the separation of southern Sudan.

In its Monday session at the National Assembly in Omdurman, the National Legislature, headed by Ahmed Ibrahim Al-Tahir, decided to return to the Sudanese presidency the list of nominees to review the rules for nomination.

The 9-member commission will be chaired by Mohammed Ibrahim Khalil, former foreign minister, and his deputy is Chan Rek Madut, Deputy Attorney General in the Government of Southern Sudan.

The other members are Paulino Wanawilla, Tariq Osman, Deng Awur, Suad Ibrahim Eisa Juwal Shuwang, Setti Abyei and Taj Al-Sir Mohamed Saleh who was objected today.

    To Bashier( NCP)

When someone has no ability to share, the only option is to take the entire portion inorder to stop others to ask for the share. It seems that the Northern Government and its allied does not know that people of South Sudan are asking them their portion.

It’s clear that NCP want to take the entire share through dangerious steps. The Bashier govt must know that we will not stop this referendum in our favor till the end of this world, that is right!

We South Sudanese will not get out of our butts unless you allowed us peacefully for the referendum instead of you trying to play the game of selfisness in the entire country.

Why the refendum commission members are all from the NCP or other influncial parties who are indeed the part of NCP. This is disaster and NCp must know that there will be no peace if they try to play around with bitterness in the Sudan.

This referendum is not a joke and this can not be compare to the addis Ababa agreement.

This refendum will be peaceful if both SPLM and NCP work fairly without hidden agenda but if NCP works for destruction, then we Southerners can not afford it to happen. Caution to NCP!
