Athor says his forces clash with SPLA forces, army spokesman denies it

By Ngor Arol Garang

June 21, 2010 (AKON) – The Spokesman of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA), Maj. Gen. Kuol Deim Kuol, has vehemently dismissed allegations suggesting another fresh clash between the SPLA forces and forces loyal to former SPLA General, George Athor Deng, who turned rebel after April elections.

Athor in an interview with Sudan Tribune on Monday said his forces clashed with SPLA forces on Sunday, describing it as one of the first deadly clashes ever occurred between his forces and the SPLA.

“Our forces yesterday at ten o’clock in the morning met with SPLA forces at reconnaissance site, south-west of Khorfulus town,” he said, adding that they were engaged in what he described as fierce and a real fight twice.

He said that it was one of the first deadly clashes since he rebelled against the regional government, which he accused of votes rigging.

“This is the first time our forces recorded more than 5 casualties in one clash. We have lost eight people and left three others wounded. On their side, we have information that 85 were killed and 14 more were injured,” he said, adding they have also captured more guns from the SPLA forces.

“Our forces have captured 24 Kalashnikovs and 5 hand grenades from the SPLA forces,” he said. Athor also added that he expects more attacks from the SPLA against his forces.

Reacting to the interview the SPLA Spokesman, Maj. General Kuol Deim Kuol, SPLA described Athor’s version of the story as mere and cheap propaganda that does not hold any truth. Kuol categorically denied knowing any fresh clash reported to have occurred between forces loyal to General Athor and SPLA.

“I am not aware of any fresh clash involving our forces against Athor again. All he is reporting are not correct. All he is reporting do not bear any single truth to publish them. They are all fabrications and white lies to suit his intention,” he said. The SPLA spokesman however explained that the last fight between the SPLA forces and those of George Athor was on the 15th of this month.

Athor became the first political contender of the last April poll to stage armed protest, accusing the Southern Sudan ruling party of votes rigging. His rebellion prompted many Southern Sudanese intellectuals to describe it as unpatriotic decision driven by greed for power which destabilizes the region in the run up to the region’s referendum on independence, scheduled for January 2011.

Renegate Athor is wasting his time and turning his reputation upside down, he fought along side the SPLA during the liberation of the country, yes but he seems to have forgotten. He will never go any further other than killing SPLA soldiers and allowing his forces to be killed for nothing. May be he wants to be like Konyi of LRA. MAUMAU

Just shut fugitive Athor. Your forces have no military ability to go toe to toe with the mighty SPLA. SPLA is way better equipped and well trained than your militias made up of close relatives . That’s why you are hiding in the bush and on the run day and night. Your cousins are just cowards like you and have no courage to engage in an open military engagement with the SPLA. SPLA is America and you are Vietcong deploying hit and run tactics but unlike the Americans , the SPLA is quietly watching out for you day and night and it won’t be long before you are captured with all of your relatives wiped out. Just hand your sorry ass in and stop your propaganda tactics.

And why is it taking such long time without being crashed (Athor)? Athor is buying time and taking more life and hence, SPLA is ought to be watchful.

One more thing, you have done away with Gatluak Gai who just backslides recently and why is Athor case handled differently? Hmmmm, something fishy must be going on. Is that not right?

    Patriots,

After looking at Kiir’s bloated cabinet, it is a great joy to see renegade like Gen Athor able and willing to stand up for the common men.

Get it now southern Sudanese. Leutenant General Ladu Gore is a man of peace and wants peace to prevail above all injustices. He had not run to Kahrtoum or to the bush but chose to remain within to talk peace.

Athor must give peace a chance and Kiir must accept peaceful resolution of conflict in Jongolei State. Kual manyang is another personality that needs to be taught the vocabulary of peace for the sake of his people and people of southern Sudan.
Aturjong must come back to Juba and talk real peace, for I am sure Kiir has a heart to listen and give peace a chance especially now.

We are no born to be Governors, minsiters, etc but first and foremost to be peace makers.

the job needed for the SPLM/A is not only to denied what Athor said, but to look for him[Athor] any where either to breif him or capture him.I think the referendum of south sudan next year could not be avioded because of Athor who try to made it.General Athor can learn from General Gatluak Deng Garang and general Dau Aturjong who give forgiveness because of next year referendum and self determination for southern sudan.look for Athor any where either to breif him or capture him,if not willing.

Sudan Tribune has really become a NEGATIVE website. What are the owners trying to do? Spread hatred and discord among South Sudanese? Why are you always reporting negative news? I am sure there are BILLIONS of positive events occuring everyday in Sudan but none of those appear on Sudan Tribune. WE HAVE SEEN THE GAME YOU ARE PLAYING!

We may be free from the Arab North in the remaining months, but if we still have malitias in South Sudan after independent, we shall not proclaim total freedom for those malitias will remain a pain in the butt. Kiir better deal with this insurgency now.
