South Sudan buys military transport helicopter – report

September 3, 2010 (KHARTOUM) — Southern Sudan army bought 10 helicopters from a Russian firm to transport troops, said a report unveiled by a news agency today.

Bloomberg’s report published on Friday said it has obtained a copy of the agreement between Kazan and the government of Southern Sudan, (GoSS) represented by SPLA Chief of Staff James Hoth Mai inked in May 2010.

The 10 MI-17s ordered by GoSS are MI-17s manufactured by the Russian Kazan Helicopters.

“The first four helicopters were later scheduled to be flown from Kazan airport to Entebbe in Uganda on Aug. 12 aboard an Antonov AN-124 aircraft, according to correspondence between the parties.”

Last August, a pro-National Congress Party (NCP) news website put out a report saying Southern Sudan army acquired 11 military planes from Kazan Aircraft Production Association (KAPA). But the SPLA dismissed the report.

Northern Sudanese army spokesperson Al-Swarmi Khalid told Bloomberg they were informed about the deal. He further said nothing proves that the aircraft are for military purposes.

Helmoed Romer Heitman, a military analyst said Southern Sudan, which is expected to vote in favor of independence in a referendum on self-determination next January, want to “discourage Khartoum from trying to preempt or nullify the referendum”.

    Bravo SPLA!!!!
It’s a right time to get prepared for the unpredictable future. Having such investment on the security of the Southerners is an enormous and highly welcomed strategy that this organization has ever made.
But remember, the helicopters alone are just a small thing. It needs the aircraft too for real move.

Thanks and God bless South and give you (SPLA) more strength.

Having bought 10 Helicopters is not enough for SPLA so there is no reason why Arabs shout all the time, despite the fact that we have different army which we are willing to equiped for itself defend against anythings interefering with the life of citizen. Plz Northerners keep your mouths Away from the Southern Affairs.

Why not jet fighters like NCP? SPLM/A should consider itself at war with the devil, it must prepare for the worst. But I was happy from the statement of SG Pagan who yesterdat threatened NCP that war would not be avoided if NCP continues hampering over referandum.
    Keep up man!!!!!

NCP Must now know that they are dealing with true Southerners. No more cheating and balabala.

NCP,Just be prepared for anything peaceful or ruthless, that you may trigger. Southerners of today are on guard.

Congratulations to our SPLA Chief of Staff for your great care and work. I knew on the day of your appointment that you are the right man for our SPLA army.

Gen. Kiir, approve more money to buy now jet fighters. Look at what Khartoum SAF bought last year WS 2 launchers, first ever bought in African soil. Did Khartoum buy them to kill who?; South Sudanese of course. And so why is NCP in panick when South Sudan Army buys just Helicopters?.

Any Southerner can go to Sudan Tribune website and see these launchers bought by Khartoum under the title China Managed to secretly sells unknown Ws – 2 launchers to Khartoum. You will find them.

Juba must also consider buying a radius that Khartoum is using for the space detection and information source. They have employed all spies everywhere in East African countries about GOSS, of what goes out and comes in!!!

SPLA Oyee, South Sudan Oyeee, Independence Oyeee.

The northern Army has been buying since we were in the bush.
No one should panic in the north about our helicopters .
What the north has always been doing is investing our oil’s money in buying tanks rather than useing it for development .
Now is the time. They have to choose one direction either to give us our rights and freedom or we destroy the already bought machineries plus the luxurious skyscrapers already built useing our money or we do away with both.
    Thanks.
    Donot beg freedom.
    Work for it.
    Southern Sudan freedom oyeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!.

First of all, i’d like to congratulate the developing South Sudan for their minor buys military transport helicopter. From my understanding, South Sudan needs to come together and defend against their enemies instead of violating each other. We are a developing nation with no strong allies, we need to focus on major things not minority, and together we will stand. God Bless
    my sincerecly thanks.
