Sudan sending delegation to Washington for talks on debt relief

April 10, 2011 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudanese government is dispatching a delegation to Washington in mid-April for talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World bank on ways to obtain relief from the country’s crippling debt.

State media reported that the delegation will include members from the federal government, National Congress Party (NCP) in control of the North and the Sudan people Liberation Movement (SPLM) which rules the South.

The African Union High Level Implementation Panel (AUHIP) led by Thabo Mbeki will also travel with the delegation, according to these reports.

Mbeki is mediating between the NCP and SPLM to help settle a wide range of post-referendum issues such as splitting up the national debt between the North and South, citizenship, wealth sharing, water, border demarcation and the status of Abyei.

South Sudan chose to secede in the plebiscite that took place last January and yielded a near unanimous vote by Southerners in favor of independence. The South will officially become the world’s newest state by the end of the interim period on July 9th.

However, the outstanding issues between the North and South cast doubts over whether the divorce would be a smooth one.

The North insists that South Sudan should bear a portion of the $37.8 billion saying that part of the money was used for development project in the semi-autonomous region.

But the South says that the money was borrowed to finance the northern army to fight southerners in the civil war.

Western countries along with Arab states such as Kuwait have promised to try and help Sudan cancel come of the debt but some officials warned this would be a lengthy process.

The former U.S. special envoy to Sudan Andrew Natsios told Sudan Tribune last year that many Western nations struggling with their economic crises at home may be reluctant to forgive Sudan’s debt due to domestic policy concerns.

Why debt relief first, yet there are more urgent issues than debt itself? This clearly show the NCP is not serious to solved the others pressing issues, intead they wanted to fool the SPLM on everythings which is not good at all. It’s better for the SPLM to beycoted it all, unless the start with the most pressing isuess like, Abyei and so.

If these huge debts are proved accurately, South may have/not used 800,000,000 millions out of that 37 billions. I do not see the reason why SPLM committed themselves to have a share in these claims to help the North or NCP from debts relief. There are no projects in the South apart from NCP buying weapons to arm Southern Militias to destroy the Government. I believe that the IMF and the World Bank were strickly concerned on the accountability of their money and they know very well that there are no projects implemented in the South.

    Hero,
Sometimes i like Pagan Amum because he keep himself serious and it is very hard to see him smiling with Arabs NCP. If all SPLM leaders and other Southern Politicians were serious like him, Arabs could not prioritize things they have benefits. Our faces should turn wild against this NCP leaders.

We need to look at them furiously. Debts are their sole responsibility and South Sudanese should not commit themselves in this since non of them was a signatory of these debts.

I feel regret when seeing Thabo Mbeki in everything when he is failing to make a wayforward to provide clear and straight forward agendas that comply with the implementation of the CPA and PCA on outstanding issues including Abyei.

July 9th, oil share and Abyei Solutions must come first before debt negotiation.

Why worry about over 30 YEARS DEBT?
THIS SHOULD NOT COME FIRST, YA SPLM!

Very huge debt, with wars in Darfur,Nuba mountains,Blue Nile & Eastern Sudan, yet people praise the North & sometimes imply remaining united with the North.Surely, those who hold such views are Dr Riek,Dr Lam,Dr blaaaaaaaa.I was once asked by a primary school pupil in my home village, as to wether the Drs mentioned above, know mathmatics. My answer was, knowledge of mathematics declines with the level of a degree, how else can one account for the acts of those two highly educated Drs in conventional terms?

    Dear Mapour,
I always reason, reason and reason and today i found a solution to myself to define the world in my own term: That the world is that spherical that has two faces “Beautiful and Ugly faces”. People like Dr Riek and Lam may one day changed their ugly faces to beautiful faces. Dr. Riek if he continue serving faithfully in the Government of South Sudan till the declaration day the 9th July 2011 he will one time become the President of the Republic of South Sudan, why not? In my earlier days, am being warned that “politics are dirty games and young men are not encouraged to associate with politics”.

Therefore, in my definition of the world that accommodate politicians and people, their habitates i feel like not to blame anyone during our struggle for Liberation although it was all bout turning left and right or finding a solution to individual problems.

Let us begin to condemn those who have defected now against the Government of South Sudan. If we feel that we are not satisfied with the current GOSS then we need to change GOSS regime through people because, it the Government of the People, by the People and for the People. There is no point of repeating or insulting such leaders. That hatred will not take us anywhere.
