South Sudan students in Uganda tell renegade Generals, SPLA to seek peaceful end

by Philip Thon Aleu

April 25, 2011 (KAMPALA) – South Sudanese students argued that their government and the defected army generals in a press conference on Monday in Kampala should use available peaceful avenues to address contentious issues that have resulted in military confrontation.

Gatluk Gok, the president of Naath Universities and Colleges Students’ Union in Uganda, called for cessation of hostilities and that they “use peaceful means with those [generals] who are against the system.”

The South Sudanese voted overwhelmingly to secede from the north in January 2011 in a referendum provided by the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) reached with Khartoum government after decades of civil war. The South is due to declare its independence on 9 July 2011 but the road to July has been marred by numerous defections from southern army, the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA).

The list of army officers deserting Juba government has grown after referendum and now includes Peter Gatdet Yak, Gatluak Gai, David Yauyau and Athor Deng.

In a press conference called by Naath Universities and Colleges Students’ Union in Uganda at Kampala International University (KIU) on Monday, the union, which brings together Nuer students from Greater Upper Nile region including Jonglei, Unity and Upper Nile states, denounced atrocities caused by clashed between the renegade generals and the SPLA and called for restraint.

“This time [pre-independence of south Sudan] is not good for us to fight ourselves. […] We urge the government to sit down with those who are against the system and use peaceful means,” Gatluk said.

Other students expressed dissatisfaction with the Government of South Sudan’s use of force to quell the rebellion.

“We are condemning these few individuals who have defected from the system,” said Ran Yak Kuol, a law student from KIU adding that “we need to caution them what they are doing is not right.”

An audio clip of views expressed by the students can be found here.

They like to be militia and latter surrender to SPLM/A when thing went out of control. This nature is know as for them since the war start. Tanginyang was wounded and escape narrowly and many of his militias were also gone, now they are surrendering. Why not before SPLA called it a last solution. This is not me at all. This method is called iron fist understanding. Sorry for them.

    @ DENG BOL!

You are commenting war to be the solution but never take part in it. Shame on you. If it is not because you will never know what is right or wrong, then you should understand that it was neither SPLA nor the REBELS that started the shooting. Someone unknown from the outskirt of the assembly area when Brig Gatwech Gai presenting a letter written by Kiir to Tanginye shot in the air and that was the cause of the war.

There are people in Southern Sudan who are still up right in thinking unlike you, who knows that killing has nothing to gain at. But because you are blindfolded by your hatred as uncivilized DINKA, that is why you think that killing these people will add you more share on behave of NUER.

Let me tell you, even if all of them died still NUER are going to be there. You just hang yourself coz that hatred you have will never benefit you in anyway.

    Hell with you and PENYAMOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes thon, the ideas is very correct and strength forward and a demand to every one from south Sudan with accept ion of the supporters who are the root cause of this problem since gatluk is one among them but I wonder why he comment on that article, and it seem is a one of the supporter that have contact with the rebel every 24hrs. it could be good also that u edited the statement or otherwise the man cannot construct the sentence as it is. ther4 gatdet point out very clearly he is supporting by a certain party which is NCP where gatluk belong, it is very shame also for Nuer in Uganda to be lead by class 7 in Sudan. bcos the man doesn’t know anything at all

    @Students

What are you talking about when you yourselves are also fighting in the campus sometimes. What change can you really bring home when you are also practicing tribalism in the school? This thing (hatred, corruption, tribalism)is chronic in your blood, it’s hereditary and will never go away from you.

Just finish school come home and we kill ourselves, because this is what we seem to be enjoying the most.

    Students.

Do not be influnced by your tribes leaders, they want to confuse you,GoSS want to secure your bright future,& that is why they are passing through this tough moments for your sake.
My advise to you is do not entangle your selves with the GoSS affairs before the appropraite time, but rather read your books.

    Think positive.

What a sectarian organisation!! South Sudan need a collective organisation whose members include Kachipo, forge, makara, lulu’bo and many voiceless South Sudanese. That I call the building of a nation-state.
