South Sudan VP leaves for UN meeting in New York after taking new oath of office

July 11, 2011 (JUBA) – The Vice President of the Republic of South Sudan (RSS), Riek Machar Teny, left for the US on Monday after taking oath of office on the same day to attend the UN Security Council’s meeting that will recognise the statehood of South Sudan.

Machar was appointed on Sunday, July 10, as the first Vice President of the Republic of South Sudan a day after the region was declared independent on 9 July.

He was sworn in at 12.00am on Monday in the presence of the President of South Sudan, Salva Kiir Mayardit, at a ceremony administered by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, John Wol Akech, and witnessed by a number of presidential advisers.

Machar told the press after taking oath of office that he thanked Kiir for reappointing him for the third time, adding that the latest appointment was different from the previous appointments because the region had become independent.

He was first appointed by Kiir as Vice President in 2005 when the previous semi-autonomous government was formed following the peace deal between North and South Sudan. His second appointment as Vice President came after the April elections last year.

Machar said maintaining peace and security along the 2,000km of borders with the Republic of Sudan was a challenge that needed to be tackled.

However, he expressed optimism that South Sudan can become the hub of Africa if its resources are properly utilised.

The Vice President, who is also the deputy chairperson of the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) said the President has assigned him on a mission to travel to New York to attend the meeting of the UN Security Council on 13-14 July. The UN is scheduled to meet from Wednesday to Thursday during which the Republic of South Sudan will be officially recognised by the world body as its 193rd member.

Machar left via Nairobi on Monday, accompanied by a number of caretaker ministers.

Cde Salva Kiir, Cde Riek Machar, and Wani Igga as the key fingures of our New Nation, need to faithfully work together as dedicated to them by the people of the RSS.

We would like to remind the President of the RSS in consultation with his Vice President to form a strong cabinet this time round, not a cabinet for gossiping.

Let the President not to listen to those tribal committees whose duty was advise the President who to be appointed in the cabinet/governorship/advisor/commissioner and so so on, such as Dinka Padang Intellectuals or Dinka Warrap Intellectuals or Equatoria Intellectuals or what so called the Nuer Intellectuals comprised of James Kok Rueah, Simon Kun Poch, John Luke Jok, Lol Gatkuoth, Taban Deng Gai, Chuol Rambang. These committees whenever they sit, they recommend themselves since they are the only characters who are close to the President.

Parallelism, some time come after ignorance. Dr. Machar was a peaceful man who believes in human dignity. His notion was to fight for southern Sudan in particular because the war was so broad during struggle Dr. John was not happy enough to acknowledge Dr. Machar’s idea that was the reason why he was in search for peaceful struggle. If come to a prove of his point, now we are in what he was saying to Dr. John. Now who practiced parallelism? stupid you.

    Yep Malual,

Kiir is just being mislead by his clanic advisors.
According to those who work close with Kiir, he is said to be a calm and charismatic person.
The bad colouring of kiir comes from those who are doing things behind his back on the name that he wouldn’t punish them because they hail from the same tribe.

This time kiir must open his eyes wide and abstain from ill-advisors whose vision is to stuff their stomaches.
Tribe must be a second choice and nationhood as the first choice.

Exactly Mr. Akoba, Kiir we are seeing is not the same kiir when we was in struggle he is so different, but until then I hope he will change dramatically, since his struggle was not just a joke which would be rouwing just like that, Kiir has a choice, and his choice must be for betterness of the government of he will continue to foregive those that are supressing is duty.

Firing Riek; there will be no SPLM under Kiir Leadership. How many times Majak Agot, Ger Chang, Kuol Manyang and the rest have tried to overthrawed Salva Kiir from presidential position? Can you find out why Salva Kiir didn’t attend 16th May 2011 in Bor while he is the president of the country? If Riek didn’t call him on phone from USA he can get Kill from that group.

    Thinks big!!!

To: President Salva Kiir Manyardit and V.P. Dr, Riek Machar Teny. Just to say congratulation for being the first leaders in the history of Southern Sudan nation. To explain a little a bit, I would really thanks Salva Kiir Manyardit for two things. One he has a good patience since the SPLA/SPLM Movement have began and up to the day the baby was born this Month. Two he had been a peace maker on Southern Sudanese people and he was willing to united Southern Sudanese though some Southerners Sudanese generals are fighting for their own self- interests, the way he had been handling Southern Sudan show that, he is a man of peace.

For Dr. Riek Machar Teny, although people says, history can oneself, I would say the V.P. has repairing part of his mistaken unlikely to those who were ruuning to Khartoum government and want to change SPLM leadership rather than changing the Khartoum government before agains the people who want to help their family living in Southern Sudan. Dr. Riek can be praising as a someone who is only come back after Khartoum history and help SPLM brothers as he did exactly. The majority of Southern Sudanese are not so dumb like before the 90% of Southerners Sudanese were none educated, this time people are observing every move of single politician in Southern Sudan. I hope he will begin opening his mind and do the best for all people in Southern Sudan and also to be able to solve the Nuer conflicts with others communities as a Son of Nuer and citizen of Southern Sudan he has to show us how he will bring Nuer to accept peaceful.

Back to New president Salva Kiir Manyardit, being a quiet man does not mean real you are a good person but afraid to talks to his people. If you choose to keep quiet you better not to lead nation because the leader must talk with citizens in order to find out what they really wanted. Visiting community and State to tell them your plan about nation and also the citizens must be given freedom of express to ask whatever, they would like to know.

Secondly, your administration always pointing figure on the Khartoum government in everything happen in Southern Sudan but not this time and not now you are become a president of New nation should you fail to stop violent in Southern Sudan’s communities eventually, you be blame for that. Anything gone wrong you both V.P. will be held accountable without pointing figure.

Establishing government must be fair and equally for all citizens in Southern Sudan. Favoritism, cronyism, nepotism and backbiting a certain part within the Southern Sudan government must not be allow. We have learns a lot of bad lesson from the Northern domination ruler and I think it is enough and people should start rebuilding young nation for most focus and peace with one another.

Cow-Boy issue is something maybe you should take in to consideration why because the leader must adress nicely and properly. You must showing your professisonalism because that position need to have a perfectionalism way of meeting internationally and I wish you should leave waring Cow-Boy and shaving face, you need to do it because you are leading new generation of 21st century that, are not attracting the Old style adress code.

    Hi!!! Aleu

You are right and no doubt about your words because this time around we don’t want to invite more troubles than before as the entire world witness our right.

Let Mr.Kiir and H.E Machar work together to channelize the Southerners in one place instead of looking for their own purposes.

Aleu anybody again your view then he/she is from Arabs origin otherwise no chances for them in South.

Mr.Cowboy must be aware about the situation of those who are in Abyei and S.Kodofan because the Bashir declared the war to South now.

No place for (CPA) once the war occur.

    George Bol.

Remember, there are thousandths of freedom which human beings needed and freedom of express was one of those things why we fought for. These are the true maybe you want to let Southern Sudan nation look down and typically, I think you have to tell your leaders before someone from another nation challenging them.

Do you want your president to dress down unprofessionalism way.? Or what do think the Cow-Boy is.? President Salva Kiir Manyardit is a human being just like those leaders in the world and he should be listen when giving special advice.

Lets now forgive though it is hard to forget the self inflicted suffering of 21 years. To build our nation we must stop patronizing one another.Lets make our leaders feel that they are not God chosen or that they will rule forever.Non of our leaders are infallable, they are humans but repeating a mistake is bad, for the worst thing in life is when the one who had suffered impose suffering in his turn & its true that it is hard to feel anothers pain if you yourself have not experience the depth of tragedy.
