S. Sudanese oppositionist accuses Kiir of killing rebel leader Gai, warns of war
July 29, 2011 (NAIROBI) – A South Sudanese opposition figure has overtly accused the country’s leader Salva Kiir Mayradit of liquidating rebel leader Gaultak Gai, warning that his death has antagonized the Nuer Community and curtailed any prospect for peace in the country.
Three days before his demise, Gai signed a peace deal with the Government of South Sudan (GoSS) after six weeks of talks. Under the deal, he was meant to integrate his forces into the SPLA and given the rank of a Lieutenant-General in the SPLA.
The SPLA denied any involvement in Gai’s death, accusing his deputy, Marko Chuol Ruei, of opening fire on his leader following internal squabbles.
Ruei went on Bentiu radio to claim responsibility for the death of his commander, stressing that he now had command over the old rebel group and expressing his desire to see through the peace deal with the SPLA.
Gordon Buay, former Secretary-General of South Sudan Democratic Front (SSDF), on Saturday chided South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir over his “cowardice act to assassinate” Gai and warned that his death will spark a war.
“The assassination of Gatluak Gai is something unknown to Dinka and Nuer culture. In Nilotic culture, you cannot kill somebody who signed peace with you,” Buay said in a letter seen by Sudan Tribune.
He went on to cite the example of how the late southern leader John Garang signed a peace deal with Riek Machar but did not kill him.
Buay warned that the entire Nuer community is “angry” and that even Nuer intellectuals will now be going to “the frontline” because what Kiir allegedly did “is something unknown in Nuer and Dinka culture.”
“Very soon, the entire Warrap State will be on fire because of what you did to Gatluak Gai who wholeheartedly signed peace for the benefit of the people of South Sudan,” he said.
The southern figure warned that peace in South Sudan was now “dead” with Gai. “You need to polish your AK-47 because from now on you will go to frontline if you are not a coward,” Buay said in his address to Kiir.
Analysts have long been warned that South Sudan, which gained independence on 9 July, might descend into ethnic violence if the government’s focus does not shift towards addressing internal grievances.

I am wondering as to why this person who feels happy to be called an Opposition figure feels concern over the dead of Gai but say nothing about those killed by his rebellion.
If am not mistaken, since the defection of Mr. Gai (May his soul rest in peace)People who were victimized were his Nuer community members. But why is this guy only love Gai but not those Gai was killing. Probable, he was using Gai to bring him as the president of ROSS.
Surely, the dead of Gai should not agitate the entire Nuer community because i believe there is nothing beneficial that Mr. Gai could do to the community or the entire south sudanese than what those innocent young boys and girls killed as a result of his war could do to us.

The death of innocent civilians who were killed by militia didn’t spark a tribal fight, why would a militia’s death turn the country into somalia? Gatluak was killed by none other than his deputy, Marko. Mr Ruei confessed that he killed his boss. I don’t doubt hi story simply because people who cruelly kill innocent people due to minor differences can turn the guns against themselves any time when there is slight misunderstanding. for sure, mr Ruei has killed a peace partner. If south sudan wasn’t chaotic sudan, this death would have been investigated. Ruei is in charge now, so any investigation will jeopardise the peace that has just been signed. President Kiir just need to extend the amnesty to Marko because he needs to be forgiven so that the integration can continue. calling for war between nuer and dinka makes no sense. I don’t know if this is luck or not for unity state people: the term ‘hero’ is applied equally to both patriots and traitors in the state even when these two groups of people are in different camps with opposite visions. Unity state is surely a safe haven for rebels because they enormous support from local people. I suggest that whenever a peace agreement is reached between the government and the rebels, the rebel leader should fly immediately to Juba, like yauyau, because he would be safe there than in his hometown where people have conflicting views about the rebellion. Another point, the president should not be blamed much because the rebels still retained power even after peace. So the government didn’t have control over them and so it cannot be held accountable for internal issues among the rebels. My Condolences!!!

if you want to accuse mr. gordon buay for predicting ethnic war in south sudan, also give some room in trying to understand his point of argument.
of course it is not good for south sudanese to butcher themselves on the basis of tribalism. we need peace and security after gaining our independence on self determination, which of course killed so many people in 1991, since some people did not believe in independence of south sudan. now that we have gotten it, we need to avoid issues that can bring insecurity such as tribal wars.
but ask yourself, what does bring insecurity?
corruption, nepotism, tribalism in government and including assassinations can bring insecurity. and this was what mr. gordon buay was trying to warn you not to follow that path.
if gatluak gai was killed in action in the frontline fighting against the government, no body would question his death. but murdering him three days after he signed peace with the government as peace partner is what brings alot of questions than answers.
and do you know why it brings alot of questions? it is because we need peace and avoid insecurity. those of gatluak gai said they fought against the government in defending democracy which was stolen during the elections last year. but if we can manage to make peace with them again and rejoin the system, that would be better for all of us. so when people see peace making as a clever attempt to lure in the rebels and kill them, then there is the worry that the rest of the rebels will not accept to be lured in again in the name of peace agreements. do you understand the implications.
so, for some body who wants genuine peace with rebels or militias (whatever favorite name in your mind) in order to end the conflicts and make south sudan free and secure, you cannot support assassinations of peace partners whether by using their colleagues to kill them or directly firing on them like in the case of gabriel tanginya at kaldak. that is not the work of people who claim to love peace and security in south sudan. they are doing the opposite of creating choas and more rebellions.

And the way things are dealt with in any country is very clear, however I am puzzled about the way some politicians tackle problems. The so called Gordon Buay as an opposition leader should bear in mind that political issues are dealt with according to the instituted system in the country. He therefore, should not just talk as if he was a village youth leader.
