UNAMID and Sudan’s spy chief discuss security in Darfur

August 11, 2011 (KHARTOUM) — The head of the hybrid peacekeeping mission (UNAMID) today discussed with the director of Sudanese security service the recent developments and the security situation in Dafur.

Joint Special Representative (JSR) Ibrahim Gambari, who returned to Khartoum this week after travelling to New York, Abuja, and Doha, met two days ago with Ali Karti to discuss Sudan’s rejection to the UN Security Council resolution 2003 which demands him to cooperate with the other UN peacekeeping operations in Abyei and South Sudan.

During his meeting with the Sudanese foreign minister, Gambari reaffirmed his commitment to respect “the sovereignty and integrity of the Republic of the Sudan and the imperatives of Security Council resolutions,” the mission said today.

Today’s meeting with the director of Sudan’s National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS) Mohamed Atta Al-Moula tackled the UN resolution and the implementation of Doha peace deal with the rebel Liberation and Justice Movement, according to the semi official media, the SMC.

However the UNAMID said in its daily briefing that Gambari discussed with the Sudanese officials in Khartoum the increasing number of attacks on the members of the peacekeeping mission.

The JSR further expressed “called on the GoS to do its utmost to bring the perpetrators to Justice,” the UNAMID said.

Attacks on Darfur peacekeepers led to the death of three soldiers since last April. Also, there are thirty peacekeepers killed by unknown gunmen since the beginning of the hybrid mission in January 2008.
