South Sudan schools win three silver medals in East Africa games

September 7, 2011 (KAMPALA) – South Sudan secondary school teams won three silver medals at the Confederation of East Africa Secondary Schools tournament games held in Mbarara, Uganda.

South Sudan students took the silver medal for basketball boys and the high jump, in the tournament, which ran from August 28 to September
4. As well as newly-independent South Sudan, Uganda, Kenya,
Rwanda and Burundi took part.

Nine schools represented the Republic of South Sudan, which became independent in July 9 as part of a 2005 peace deal. The schools that took part were Bentiu Boys, Bor secondary, Kajo-Keji Girls, Malakal Boys, Mbii Girls, Rumbek Boys, Wau Comboni Girls, Wau Day and Yambio Girls.

Adel Sandrai, Western Equatoria state minister of education, who attended the event on behalf of the national ministry, told Sudan Tribune on Tuesday that he is satisfied with the results.

“Our team did very well,” said minister Sandrai. “The teams’ progression to different stages…for the first time is encouraging,” he added.

This is the fourth time South Sudan has participated in the regional tournament but the first since independence and the first time they have registered major victories.

Minister Sandrai said that if the students train hard there was a good chance South Sudan could win a gold next year.

The minister called for an increase in funding for sporting activities so that facilities can be improved and expert coaches hired.

South Sudan’s Bentiu Boys lost to Kenya’s Laiser Hill in the basketball final by 67—80. Isaac Botarus came second in the high jump.

Sport could proof to be an important asset in nation building as South Sudan struggles to cope with its crippling under development and numerous tribal and political conflicts.

South Sudan is due to participate in the 10th All Africa Games, in Maputo, Mozambique from 3 – 18 September

    Dear readers
primitive way of selecting players will not bear any fruit.we have very talented sportsmen/women in republic of S.Sudan but random picking of these players from different states without training as a team for at least one week or two weeks is not good. if Wau boys/Juba boys secondary school players are best team in football in the Rup.S. Sudan than players from Wau/juba secondary School should represent South Sudan in East African Games because they have been training as a team . in East Africa best top three secondary school in various sport activities in each country participate in this competition not best players in a country.

    Minded.Dude,
You think like a kid man, did you really go to school? if you have really gone to school, what is different between trophies and money you were talking about, if it were money and food Dinka and Nuer would have won it, what do you mean exactly?
Dinka and nuer fought free of charge to liberate this nation and you ran to Uganda for food and money as you are pretending here that Dinka and Nuer are food and money lovers, you are stupid my dear, think back, don,t look at things the way they are.

    Hey Minded Dude,
Please participate positively when people are talking of National issues. Dinkas and Nuers are tribes within the Nation like your own tribe. Please stop division and preach unity instead.

    Hey pig,that is ur name,

I would like you to define for me what does Nyam Nyam mean?.Why do people call you like that?.To go back to the point,Nuer and Dinka are not known for food, they are known as warriors. When South Sudan gained Independent, you return from the places of displacement and start insulting them that they are not educated. The other tribes in South Sudan are tired of you.
