South Sudan releases two journalists without charges

November 18, 2011 (JUBA) – South Sudanese security services released today two journalists arrested 18 days ago without charges, one of the two detainees Peter Ngor Arol Garang told Sudan Tribune just after his release.

Ngor who is a Sudan Tribune journalist and the editor-in-chief of the newly established The Destiny newspaper had been arrested on 1 November after the publication of an opinion article written by Dengdit Ayok criticising the South Sudan President, Salva Kiir Mayadrit, for allowing his daughter to marry with an Ethiopian national.

His colleague Dengdit was arrested on 5 November.

“I have just been released without charges after spending 18 days in closed detention,” wrote Ngor after his release in a short email he sent to the Sudan Tribune. He thanked all those who contributed in a way or another for his release.

International and local human rights and press freedom groups condemned the illegal arrest of the two journalists and called for their release. Also, the South Sudan delegate to the United Nations was questioned by journalists about his arrest.

The two journalists were held in a detention facility run by the security service in Juba and no formal charge had been made against them.

Sources close to the file, told Sudan Tribune three days ago that their case had been decided to transfer them to the police.

South Sudan President Salva Kiir slammed the two journalists saying in remarks he made about their arrest on 10 November “media freedom should not be abused to the extent of attacking personalities. In any case that will be defamation.”

In a statement issued Friday to announce their release Amnesty International said “Ngor had been beaten” by the security services.

“He and Dengdit Ayok are now reunited with their families, and will go for a medical check-up in Juba on 19 November.”

Dr. Dhieu Mathok, another editor of The Destiny said the practice of arresting journalists in South Sudan needed to stop.

“This is a great mistake to arrest a journalists and released him without
charges”, he said, urging the young nation to “protect press freedom”.

This year there have been at least attacks on press freedom in South Sudan according to the country’s union of journalists. Despite having self rule since 2005 the SPLM, South Sudan’s ruling party has not passed an Information and Broadcasting, leaving many journalists unclear as to where they stand and what they are allowed to write.

shame on the government of Southern Sudan for arresting the journalists Ngor Garang and Deng.
it’s clearly stipulated in the constitution that there is a freedom of expression. why was then Ngor arrested for his article, despite he was criticizing the president? anyway. let me thank God that Ngor is out the cell.

This is just a warning, being a journalist doesn’t qualify you to do everything. Were you the who wanted to merry her? why are you so jealousy? What’s wrong with her marrying a foreigner? and you claimed to be a learned person in the society. Don’t you know that some Southerners even married to whites? You are still backward man, grow up with the world.

There are a lot of good things that’s going on in South Sudan that need to be written about, why is someone just choosing sensitive matters to make himself popular? Why not criticize the president about the corruption issues and other things? Those with Arab mentality like you and Ngor should watch out.

There are no “legitimate rules” in South Sudan at all. Journalists have right to spread any information whether good,or bad to the people. It is the job for the journalists to do that. South Sudan is the most country full of “dead brain” leaders who do not balance what is good and bad. Shame on all Southern Sudanese leaders starting from Salva Kiir to the rests.

Whoever calling Ngor Arol professional has done a mistake. Ngor deserved to be arrest because of his lies and wrong articles he use to published in Tribune. Who told them President daughter marriage to foreigner make news? They deserved to be arrested and taken to court charged with President Family defamation.

Ngor and Manyang Mayom in Lakes state articles are lies please don’t trust them.

i can call you the nitwit person who’s blind folded by your president who have lost his celebral cortex. the weeding of daughter was made public and Mr. Ngor has fundamental right to published it. it’s not bad for Kiir’s daughter to be married by a foreigner since no South Sudanese was interested in her to her status of giving her pride……

Are you married to Salva Kiir?
You are supposed to refrain yourself from supporting Salva Kiir. Wrong is wrong and we Southern Sudanese we can not withstand with Salva Kiir went he doesn’t know the right of others people. On my own analysis, Salva Kiir committed a wrong step, and he can be blame for that.

Those two journalists are brave enough to speak up for what they believe is right, they are heroes of our social revolutions. “If a man hasn’t discovered something that he will die for, he isn’t fit to live.”
